Hi, everyone who reads this! My husband and I have wanted to adopt. We have an issue, though. Eight yrs ago my husband was a different guy. He was into trouble. He had been in jail a couple of times. His last resulted in a felony. It was with a close friend who was dating his sister and he had hit her. So, my husband beat him up. Since, then though we married a yr later and he has graduated and has 2 certificates in welding and Heating and Refrigeration. We moved away from home so he could get away from bad influences. It has been good. We are Christians, too. I tied my tubes after my 2nd pregnancy. Now I have been really wanting to look into adopting, but can we? It would be so devastating if we couldn't. I just don't know who to ask or how to ask such a question. Any suggestions or insite? Thanks. Melb

You can contact adoption agencies in your area. There are informational packets and even informal introduction to adoption seminars that can give lots of info. If your questions aren't answered in those, then ask about information on their criminal background checks and what would disqualify a person from adopting.

I was told in my training that (here in WA anyway) criminal histories were handled on a case to case basis and wouldn't necessarily exclude you (except crimes against children). Depends on what happened and how long ago it was, if you'de received counseling or other treatment (anger management courses perhaps). I'd try calling a few different agencies and talking to foster care office and just say that your husband has XYZ in his past but it was X number of years ago and will this make him ineligible for adoptive parenting? Try out several agencencies as it probably varies from one to another.
