Hi, I'm an LDS girl who is planning on adopting in a few years after I get married. I know some women can do the Single parent thing, but I am not one of them. I am hoping to adopt domestically, from Russia/Eastern Europe and then possibly China. I look forward to getting to know you all! :)
Good to have you. Use this time to educate yourself on a few aspects that are particular to adopting children in these situations.
Please do the heaviest research in the following:
Reactive Attachment Disorder
Post-Institutionalized Children
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Read:
Adopting the hurt child
Parenting with Love and Logic
Attachment Parenting
Chances are a child you adopt will have at bare minimum 3 of these and 90% chance the child will have all of these issues. Getting a head start in training yourself is a really great idea. The more time you have to prepare the better. Start looking into support services where you plan to live. Visit radzebra.org for some more in depth info.
Absorb everything you can. The special needs parenting boards here are a wealth of info, and most of the members have adopted their children the way you intend to. You'll be able to get a glimpse into the real life scenarios that raising a child from those backgrounds will entail.
It will be hard, but you can do it if you're prepared. Welcome! :)
