Hello Ladies-
I am new to this forum.....actually this is my first post.
I am highly interested in learning more about breastfeeding an adopted infant. I am not sure where to even start. Any suggestions????

Go to drjacknewman.com. They have tons of general info. Personally I've been on the protocol they suggest since March and started pumping about a month ago. I'm producing 9.5 oz of milk a day now. I think there are others on here who have made more and some who have made less. I take herbs recommended by Dr. Newman also. If you have other questions, feel free to post here! I will say the only negative thing I've experienced throughout the whole process is that my OB/GYN flat out told me adoptive breastfeeding is impossible and that even if I could make milk it wouldn't be the same as if I had been pregnant. I ended up having to switch doctors to be able to get the support/info I needed and to have a prescription written for the domperidone. If you run into this, I suggest you contact a lactation consultant. The lactation department at our local hospital recommended me to a doctor that was supportive of adoptive breastfeeding.

I agree with Usisarah. You can also go to Ask Lenore ~ Breastfeeding ~ Induced Lactation ~ The Newman-Goldfarb protocols . It definitely can be done. Although, I'm not having quite as much success as Usisarah! 9.5 oz a day?! I started the protocol in march, started pumping about a month ago and I'm getting 2 oz a day...spread the wealth ;)
I am curious...are you both following the Newman-Goldfarb protocols? I haven't looked at the link provided above by HopefulMom2bee. However, I am curious about the herb supplements...what are you taking? I noticed that you both started taking the supplements in March and just started pumping a month ago. Is this part of the protocol suggested by Newman-Goldfarb?Any information is welcome.
I think we are both on the Newman-Goldfarb protocols. Ideally I would have liked to be on the protocol for 6 months before starting to pump, but we got matched with an emom in May and she's due in August so I started pumping about 8 weeks before the due date. The recommend pumping six weeks before the due date, but the emom we are matched with has issues that lend to premature birth so I started earlier. Three years ago I had a bio daughter and breastfed her...I've heard that if you've lactated before it can be easier to start relactating.
Forgot to answer the herb question...I'm on fenugreek and milk thistle. I accidentally bought milk thistle instead of blessed thistle. When I run out of milk thistle I'll switch to blessed thistle...Dr. Newman's office said the milk thistle is safe to use but they're not as sure of the benefits as they are of the blessed thistle. I started out using Mother's Milk Plus, but it's pretty expensive in the pill form. They have a liquid form that I heard on another thread is cheaper, but I haven't tried it. I freeze all the milk I pump so later I hopefully won't have to supplement with formula.
