The social constructs of being Black. There is a recent publication out about identifying as Black despite their racial make-up, "passing as Black". Hmm, since when? thought it is what it is.. was always so.
The artist was mentioned in an article I was perusing: Her video is in the mid portion. Of course she is between my moms age and mine..so her experience is a bit more "out there". Still good that Ms. Piper was able to garner the education, and the venues to express herself. Not only about constraints, one race, but even beyond...too cool.
Makes me think of those I interact with, and have in our family (bio and adopted), the Thurgood Marshalls, Lena Hornes, Booker T Washingtons; deemed it is what it is, and the question so what are you? Here her race is assumed, thus her artistic interpretation, and some.

It's not necessarily a geographical thing. My neice is from California and she moved here with some ideas that I didn't expect. I know California is about looks but I didn't think they would buy into the whole colorism thing. I was wrong. I think the determining factor is how the community dynamics are set up. If there are very few people of color then colorism is usually not an issue. If there are a lot as with any group someone comes up with a way to create a division. I always attended schools with very few AA's in Georgia so it was never an issue. The issue was just being black so it didn't matter what shade you were.
The colorism in Atlanta was far worse than what I ever experienced in rural Georgia or Alabama. Back when I was in college your color determined which sorority you got into... One of the reasons why I didn't pledge. You are told you belong here or there. That was a turn off for me.
Yeah, I can't explain how I never encountered this personally growing up. Maybe I did and it had no impact and thus I don't remember. I grew up in a mixed ethnic neighborhood - blacks, whites and Latinos (Puerto Rican). I was shocked when I grew up and learned that generally speaking, blacks and Latinos had strained relationships.
Don't even get me started on sororities and Atlanta...LOL! You know, I really miss that city but it seriously has its issues.
I've had women ask me right off the bat which sorority I'd pledged... almost like the answer would dictate if we could be friends or not! I was so taken aback by the question, I stammered out "huh?" I'm so far removed from my university days it's not even funny... not to mention pledging wasn't really "my style". I don't have the right temperament for hazing. As my grandmother would say "you put your hands on me you're going to draw back a nub". She was a firecracker in her day!
I'm on Long Island. My 2nd year of college, I learned about sororities and fraternities. The AKA's only wanted light-skinned, long hair members. Talk about divisive!! There has been talk about sororities and fraternities being divisive within the black community. It's tough; we're already divided!!

I didn't know there were strained relations between blacks and latinos either. I used to live in a country where the blacks were Hispanic and there wasn't any drama. I even dated Latino guys before and there was never any mention of it. It's kind of funny that I always got hit on because I look Hispanic according to them. My first name also played a part because it is a Spanish name.

The sororities and fraternities have gotten away from colorism for the most part. Some of the old folks are bent on keeping it going though. They are just control freaks anyway... wanting to tell you who you can date or marry too.
I remember being asked due to a pink and green outfit of DDs. lol
Maybe other areas, like the West Coast. My neighborhood was comprised of Blacks, and people from PR, sprinkle of Asian, sprinkle of CC.
I never did understand that whole color thing. If I think I look good in something I'm going to wear it. :D Same for DD. DD looks good in brights and jewel tones so that's what I buy.
Ok Nick... Tell me about the Easter clothes. I know you have something good planned. I need some ideas. We will be taking professional pictures this year. We might do the live bunnies and ducklings pictures for the kids since I'm able to plan ahead. We also need some family pictures and the photographer suggested that I put DD in yellow and I should get a matching dress.
Easter is approaching so fast! I was checking out an outfit at Talbot..but being cheap I may just go for the skirt,I have a 3/4 sleeve off white jacket already. It's predominant color is yellow too. I have not seen an outfit for DD that catches my eye. My men folks have me on over buying for DD notice. lol
We will go to our usual spot in the subdivision to take pictures. We are holding off on the profession pics ( I already have one of those black bubble type dress type (silk taffeta) for DD to match mine. Maybe later this year, Dh and I have to work on our post holiday pooch. :D

I don't pay full retail price for anything... it's sales, clearance or wholesale. I still feel like I have to sneak stuff into the house some days. I've got it figured out now. When DH has to get the kids ready for school and he can't find something or if he thinks something is shabby looking that is a queue to go shopping. Lately he has been complaining about DD's clothes so I hit the stores on the weekend and started on the kids spring/summer wardrobe. Both of the kids have a vain streak with DS being worse than DD. All the major clothing fights have been with him. That little rascal said he doesn't like it when DH buys his clothes. LOL!
I only splurge on special occasion clothing because they will live on forever in pictures. I usually have to slide those in under the radar and have amnesia when DH asks the price. If he gets compliments on the outfits all is forgiven.
Do you sew?
I'm going to do a series of pictures of the kids and plan on getting a pettiskirt for DD. Those suckers cost $80 if you buy one but you can make it for around $20. I found instructions on how to make them. If you want to do one for your DD just let me know and I'll send you the link for the instructions and a site to get the materials needed. I'm in negotiations with my sister to get her to make it because I just don't have time. What does my sister say? Why don't you let DD make it... Duh... she's 5 years old and shouldn't be using a sewing machine.
LOL if I buy clothes for the boys too.. then its okay. My younger son is particular too.
I found a few good deals on fall stuff for DD, during the winter clearance, so I think she is good to go for school.
My mom made DD a couple of slips, those are so pricey, and its a special item now. Clothes are so casual now-a-days, it makes what we called proper under garments a boutique item. crazy.
I do not sew, but am thinking of lining up someone who does.
You are not kidding about slips. They are very hard to find. I think I posted a few years back on our Easter clothing thread that I was looking for one. I finally found one at Strasburg Children. I still have that thing even though it no longer fits DD. I keep it with her heirloom clothing.
I see a couple of things I like at Wooden Soldier. Make sure you check out the hats. I'm itching to go old school and put DD in a hat.

I may start a new thread for clothing, accessories and hair bows. I found a few sites that sell supplies to make bows and have pretty good instructions. That quirky children's boutique stuff is expensive.
The prices are crazy, I'll check out the link. My boys used to be decked out when they were little, but now we do blazers with cords, linens, or khakis. I will spend money on a good blazer.
DD looks like a little old lady in hats.. LOL I do want to get her a new purse. I did find a cute dress; sleeveless eyelet with a bit of lace trim, at Kohls.. all white. Nice quality. I purchased a spring colorful sweater to go with it.

Kohl's is my place. I think I'm in there every single week. They need to stop sending those $10 gift cards because I use every single one they send. Somebody had started stealing the cards that were being mailed to me. I should have filed a compliant with the post office because they were removed prior to being put in my mailbox. I finally signed up for emails and they send them via email now.
