Hi, I've asked this before but didn't get any replies (probably because I asked too many other questions at the same time) so will keep it simple this time. Also, I asked it in Birthparent support which was probably the wrong place.
Is it always the mother that registers the birth (i.e. if she is still around)? When it comes to the name on the birth certificate, is it likely that a nurse may have named the child (my non-ID said this was a possibility)? I get the impression from others on here that if a mother doesn't name her child, the birth certificate just comes out as "Baby" Whoever; I don't know if I have seen anyone else who has been named by a "third party".
I don't know how it works in NZ, but here in the US I think it's fairly common to have "Baby Boy" or "Baby Girl" X. My bmother told me that my OBC lists me as "Baby Boy (bmother's last name)." Of course, even with her consent the state won't let me see it, so I can't confirm whether that's really what's on there, but that's how she filled out the form.

Usually it is done in the hospital and the mother provides the info, the doctor fills out his part and signs it as well. It could be that a nurse provides a name if the mother did not provide one, I have heard it happened. It is also possible that the mother picked out a name, put it on the paperwork and it was changed to Baby Girl/Boy because the paperwork stated baby for adoption...
They played games back then, a lot, including the slimmy one of the mother checking in under the adoptive mothers name...
Steven - I have my OBC and it is Baby Girl with my mothers last name...

I have a name on the certificate but my non-ID said it could have been a nurse or my birth mother who named me. I wish I knew either way. It is just that reading these forums, I realised that lots of people just have "baby girl" and that made me think that if my birth mother hadn't named me, then would a nurse really have named me, wouldn't I have just been "baby girl", that's why I was asking.
I suppose the annoying thing is that when most adopted people see that they have a name on their certificate, they feel glad that their mother named them but I can't even have that satisfaction. Ah well, it's hardly important in the grand scheme of things. I don't think she even named her later children (think grandmother did) so I am not alone in that regards.
I haven't ever heard of a nurse naming a baby. I know I would have liked to have named my daughter but did not know I could. Believe it or not her a.parents gave her the first name that I would have given her. This was in the old days of closed adoption. It hurt me to see her birth certificate said Baby Girl ....-father unknown. I had given them his name address and phone number. I was told that it was easier that way.
At the maturnity home we all had fake names. We were only allowed to see our babies one time. There were windows on 2 sides of the nursery like in a regular hospital except the curtains were always closed. I remember another girl motioning to me to sit by her on a bench in the entry-way. The nursery window was behind us. A was a baby crying. Then I heard a nurse inside call the baby by my fake name. I listened every day afterward but that was the only time. On the records my daughter obtained from the state we are both referred to by my fake name but not on the birth certificate- which she still can't get.

Thanks Patty cake. It was just that my non-ID info said that they weren't sure who named me. I was in hospital/foster care for 3 months. I would have assumed that if my birthmother hadn't named me then it would have said "baby girl". I just wish I knew. I can't ask my birthmother as she has already passed away.
I just find it weird that even after reuniting, people still can't get their OBCs. I don't even understand the need for sealed records - the sky hasn't fallen in in the states and countries that do have open records.
