So i am going to make the commitment to pump/nurse w/lact-aid more often. I have gotten lazy the past month and want to get my supply up and nurse more. My question is, how long should i expect it to take before i notice an increase in supply?? I think i can manage to pump/nurse at least 2 more times a day than i do now. Do you think that will make a difference or not?? I want to at least try and if i notice an increase in supply, great, if not, then i know this is the most i CAN produce. Thanks, Rach

I would give it at least a couple weeks. I read that inducing lactation or relactating is like building a house brick by brick (by hand) instead of hiring a construction company to do it for you. Your breast has to build new milk making tissues to meet the demand and this can take time. I would be patient and it will come! If you were able to go from nothing to 5 oz without even being pregnant then you should be able to increase now. I think it is a mostly a matter of supply and demand.
Not sure if you already do these things but I would try switch feeding (change sides multiple times when milk flow slows) and compressions during feedings. This will help drain your breast and tell your body that baby needs more milk. I think that it is also helpful to nurse more often instead of nursing forever. My body really seems to respond to power pumping - where for 1 hour a couple times a day -I pump for 10 minutes and rest for 10 minutes and pump for 10 minutes and so on.
Good luck!! I totally think that you can do it - You have already done the amazing and given your baby a priceless gift!
Rach, how are you doing with this? I wonder if your pumping volume is giving you a distorted view of the amount of milk you are producing. I was a terrible pumper. It took until my third baby for me to figure out that what I could pump was very misleading. Have you tried several pumps? I tried lots of pumps, and the ones I did the best with were not those that are usually considered to be good. I found that, any time I decided to add pumping and pay close attention to my milk supply, my kids ended up taking MORE supplement. I could only gauge my milk supply by the amount of formula they took and from their stools. Another thing I found helpful, in fighting discouragement over milk supply, was to focus on the fact that, once the babies got a little older, nursing would be less demanding and more fun. If I got through the first six months, I was able to relax more and then just let the baby decide how long he/she wanted to nurse. My last four self-weaned, at an average of two years old. I love nursing toddlers! Hang in there and enjoy your little guy! Oh, and if you want to PM me with your address, I will send one of my crocheted bibs for your son.Darillyn
