As an adoptee turning adoptive parent, I think it is important to share my story. I was placed in foster care at three months old, adopted at age 18 months, started searching for bio family at 18, reunited with bio mom at age 32, and am fostering-to-adopt my four year old half brother currently. Growing up adopted, I had no resources to turn to or others to relate my experiences to. That is why I feel it is so important to get my book published and out there for all to read - regardless of how they are involved in the adoptive process, if at all.
When I committed to write a book, I made the decision that I wanted to use a self-publisher versus trying to shop a publishing company to "buy" my story. It is important to me to be able to tell my story in my own voice and my own style and to retain creative control over the finished product. I spent a lot of time researching and choosing a self-publisher. I finally settled on local Minnesota company that offers publishing packages which include editing, printing, cover art, advertising, distributing, e book, and all the bells and whistles. The drawback to self-publishing is, of course, that I have to cover the costs up front and then hope the book sells. A friend of mine had recently successfully funding a film project through a Kickstarter Campaign and he suggested that I try this platform of crowd-funding to raise the money to publish my book.
The brilliance of the Kickstarter format is that it gets people who are interested in the project or would like a finished copy of the book to buy in on the front end and have a piece of "ownership" in getting the product out there. The main drawback to this format is that if the campaign does not reach its funding goal within the projected time frame, none of the funds are distributed - so it is all or nothing.
I hope that you will all see the value in getting this book published so that it is out there for all to read and sign on to be a backer of my Kickstarter Project at any level you can contribute. You can be a backer for as little as $1!! A $25 backer is guaranteed a copy of the book among other rewards. If you are a $60 backer, you will also receive a special USB stick that will come pre-loaded with the e book copy and resources about adoption and search and reunion. If you check out the project you will get to see in detail all of the ways you can be involved.
Even if you can't support this project financially, I would appreciate it if you would share the link and help me get the word out! Post it to your blog, Facebook, Twitter, email list, however you want to get it out there.

Abby, after visiting your site it's apparent you're already well into your book! Reading your story made me thankful for the opportunity I had today to meet my birth father, I'm glad I didn't wait. I wish you success with your book--my parents constantly tell me I need to write one, maybe I will follow your example!
