What do you think of this article?
Poll: 46 percent of Mississippi Republicans want interracial marriage ban - War Room - Salon.com
This was a telephone poll of people registered republican.
Apparently a lot of young and older people are against this.
Does this mean 46% of republicans are racist in MS?
Should I keep myself and my kids out of there? Your thoughts please.
Hmmm... I don't know Mississippi but in the Czech Republic there was a poll recently saying that 90 percent of all citizens said they would not want to have non-white neighbors. My husband and I are wondering where the other ten percent are hiding. We'd like to meet a few more of them. :P

I think that attitude crosses party lines in Mississippi. They were the place where they let CC's transfer to schools out of district just so they wouldn't have to be around minorities and they also allowed all CC classroom in the diverse schools to appease parents. This was exposed last year...

This chap tries to look at the claims more evenhandedly with a link to GSS from 1998-2002.
Like others, I would like to see the Democrat figures, surveying only one side of the political fence is hardly going to give a full picture.

The article states that the group who did the survey was a left leaning group. Any survey or poll can be skewed to come up with the answer the pollster wants to come up with. If they had polled a truley random sample of all Mississippians I would be shaking my head at Mississippi right now. However, it looks like they specifically targeted radical right wingers in the Republican party of Mississippi. Of course they are going to come up with those numbers if they poll that group. I wish folks on both sides of the isle could stop all this nonsense and come together with a rational, logical conversation and work out solutions to all the problems we have right now.
Me too. Our country is so messed up right now & we need to all come together if we want to solve the problems. I'm not an expert on Mississippi but from what I've heard I wouldn't be surprised if they got the same results from asking Democrats there this question.
I am from the midwest and I just got back from a trip to New York City. It was so nice to see all of the mixed-raced couples. They were everywhere! I thought how nice couples no matter what their race...Caucasian, Asian, Indian, African-American, etc....can openly love one another.

Sleep...that just chills me every time I think about it. I also think about how Miss. is also at the bottom of every list in America...education, income, health, etc. I am not trying to be offensive to anyone from Miss...or that has family from there, but the state is backward in so many ways. The fact that overt racism is prevalent there doesn't surprise me when so many people live in poverty, are less educated, etc. I hope I didn't just make a mess out of what I was trying to say.
As for the statistics in the OP's story, if I learned anything from taking "Political Theory, Research, Methodolgy, and Statistics" FOUR times (required class, MWF at 3pm...and BOOOOORING...which is why it took so long for me to complete it...lol) it's that I don't trust ANY stats, any more. There are so many variables that can skew statistics! Who you survey, where, education levels, how many people are in the survey, etc. I just don't take surveys at face value any more.
I watched this video last last night, I almost got physically sick when they ran over the poor guy. I can usually handle stuff like that, could be the visual but, to beat him then run over him. These kids were bent to do something, and actually drove in a pack to the Black side of their town. As for the OP it's certain people not party lines; racism is an evil disease.

I cried. And was sick. I cannot fathom the stupidity and depravity of people.

Unfortunately, racism is everywhere, it's just well hidden most of the time. Heck, even some people praise it without question. Think about it, most abortion clinics are located in minority neighborhoods, but why wouldn't they be, the industry started out based on racism and likening minorities to weeds. The criminal justice system is very similar on many levels. Heck, even my husband has been made fun of by "liberals" because of his skin and his job (he's Mexican, looks middle Eastern, and is in a professional tribute group of a white musical group, thus not looking the part). Its amazing how rude people are about skin color. Racism is all around. Even Asians are assumed many things (usually positive).
I couldn't watch the video and won't watch it.
I've been to Mississippi many times and it's another world and I live in the South.
Here's a documentary that ran a few years ago. I caught it when it ran on HBO.

Here's another one... The Last Slaves of Mississippi.
They were held under peonage and didn't have electricity, a phone or a radio. Check out how the families have different recollections of what happened.

Just out of curiosity, what musical group?
Yea, Dh has his limits as to where he will live. When we did our leisurely family drive to Texas, we stuck close to the highway stops. This story blew my mind back when; can you imagine? At least others were share cropping, this family was held in pure bondage.

We used to take a lot of road trips... had some tour group trips to the casino's in Mississippi and one trip alone. We knew from the tour group trips there were certain places we couldn't stop. The scariest trip was one DH and I took alone. We got lost (pre-GPS) at night and were followed a couple of times on the way. We swore we would never do that again and haven't. We stuck out like sore thumbs... very few mixed race people in the area we were in so we didn't see any AA's who looked like us living there.
They still have some segregated proms in that state (my state does too) and they were also the state where a school canceled a prom because they didn't want a lesbian bringing her girlfriend.
So it isn't a stretch to see how there is a dislike for interracial relationships there. This crosses party lines but... you have to realize in the South race and politics intersects in a major way. Back in the day the majority of AA's were Republican because of Lincoln and a majority of CC's were Democrats... when the civil rights era started there was a flip-flop. I have some older relatives who never changed from being Republican.
We got lost on our way to one of the barrier islands.. late at night our GPS screen showed the car icon riding over water, and blank spaces. Possums and other creatures of the night.. eyes glowing. Never again. lol
You have the overlap Blue Dog Democrats too, historically CC in the south, and certain working class areas elsewhere like PA. They still have the old povs of pre de-segregation times.
I am not into party lines Republicans, Democrats, left/ right. Learned to look at the underlying agendas not the party or org.
I get what some Black Republicans say about the condescending manner of some liberal agendas. I have read enough liberal blogs to see how many do not respect the present POTUS. Bias shows up there too, some utilize Blacks and minorities as a hobby ideology..but deep down, they do not see the same groups as equal. The Black and moderate Republicans still need to be more vocal and stand up to the racial/xenophobic political tactics being pushed, mainly since the Reagan times. The tactics are out of control now.
