Sleeplvr, I know you have an opinion! Talk to me! I'm back on the "I'm doing my own hair and wearing it natural" kick. But THIS time I'm serious... I've heard good things about steamers (and recall that TooGroovy charged an extra $20-$30 for a session). Fe, If you decide to order, please post a review. I'm looking for anything to help with my dd's hair. She has extra thick hair and is tenderheaded. A combination which leads to a daily struggle in our household. She's at the salon now. I had to drag her there almost kicking and screaming. The only thing that helped was a cartoon bribe, lol. But with this heat and humidity, I'll be at my wits end again soon.

Have tried braids yet? My DD is tenderheaded too. We had major battles with getting her hair combed. We've finally got a braider who doesn't braid tight. The braids save us from the daily hair combing drama. It's easy to wash and stays decent looking for 6-8 weeks.
I've got pictures posted of DD's latest 'do on facebook. It's been holding up very well with all the swimming this summer. It looks like a lot of hair but she started out with alot of hair. Her hair is the entire length of the braid and the curly part is the extension hair.
Is your DD still taking tennis? How's hair maintenance with that? Do you have to wash it a lot?
Hi SavannahGirl! I haven't "seen" you in awhile, I hope all is well. Yes, I did order and I received an email last night saying it shipped. I'll be sure to give you my thoughts. I should warn that I know very little about hair and bought it based on reviews claiming that it helped define curl patterns. I'm sick and tired of salons, I really am... I'm planning to get a quick trimming of the ends today, but after that... I'm DONE! No more hair salons for me... seriously, I mean it this time.

Sleep, I saw your dd's braids on FB. They are really cute. Does your dd's stylist take them out also? My cousin braided dd's hair at the beginning of the summer. She did not give A. any problems when she was braiding her hair. Most of the hair drama is reserved for me and her stylist who she saw on Monday. It was a nightmare however taking the braids out. They had to be out for a dance performance on a Sunday. I decided to wait until she went to sleep on Saturday night thinking it would be easier for both of us. I was up until 3 am. We usually do tennis in the Spring and Fall. So I plan to start her again soon. At her age so far they mainly do drills to learn the different strokes. So I don't have to wash her hair any more than usual. The last time I washed it wasn't so bad. Fe, We are doing good. Yesterday was the first day of first grade. How are you and your dd? Wishing you success on doing your own hair. You sound committed so I know you can do it  . Keep us posted on how it's working out. Maybe it will encourage more of us to get off the fence.
The previous stylists we had didn't take braids out but our new one will take the braids out. I'll remove the braids so I can wash and condition it well before it's done again. It usually takes me the same amount of time to remove them as it took to put them in if I do it alone. Last time I took them out I had DD help so it went a lot faster. I just had to start them and she finished while I worked another part of her head.

Savannah, So I used it today... Overall I enjoyed the experience of using the steamer. I have my curls back  so either it's a miracle worker, or they were never really gone. After I combed the conditioner through, I did have to do a lot of "scrunching" to get the curls to appear.... so I imagine the blow drying and flat iron has taken it's toll. I'm on a "no-heat" mission right now. I tossed my flat iron under the sink.
I think the steamer added moisture to my hair, I'm not sure if that will help with your DDs hair or not.
Sleeplvr, I followed the advice in the Curly Like Me book by Teri LaFlesh. I really like that book, it talked on my level as a novice. So, right now I have a head full of curly hair that I'm digging and will probably pull it into a ponytail on Monday.
Nick, I thought of you as I was under the steamer - starting craving gumbo. Sitting under the steamer wasn't as horrible as sitting under a dryer. I was able to sit still for about 35 mins. (okay, ONE mini break... I was thirsty).

Yes, I do like it. But I wanted to warn you that I think the construction is rather... crude. Almost like it's a prototype, instead of the final product. I'm sure someone will get this and make it a bit more "finished".
I'm going to use it again this weekend. I've decided to steam my hair every week and to definitely forgo heat styling for the foreseeable future.
Have you tried "CurlFormers"? I don't think I'm there yet (in terms of skill and patience), but wanted to consider them for future use...

Thanks for the review. I'll have to add the steamer to my wish list.
Just wanted to report in that I haven't used heat on my hair since 8/20... almost 4 weeks! I've washed my own hair every week and used the steamer 3x. I've spent a small fortune on hair products, but so far my fave is this cheap Aussie conditioner from the drugstore. I wanted to love the Kinky Curly stuff... I don't.. I'll see if DD's hair likes it... That's all. Just bragging on my new "skills" :)

Busted...:o
LOL! So, I did go to the hair salon ONCE since this thread started. I hadn't had a hair cut in about a year and wanted to just even things up and also chop off some of the straight pieces.
I've been wearing my hair natural for the most part. In fact today I'm rocking a curly 'do - no ponytail or puff... It's just out. I feel pretty good about myself. I do plan to get it flat ironed in the next two weeks. I have a little routine and I feel really comfortable wearing it out. I've been doing a lot of research and have learned for me that simple is best. I've been applying the same techniques to DD's hair and have seen major improvements in her hair as well.

Update por favor?
Sounds like a good track record! I like the option of versatile styles, but nothing like not running when it starts to rain. lol Thinking of a flat ironing session soon. We just had a soft water system added to the house water supply, waiting to see if this makes a big difference.
