Does anyone here have experience to share regarding name changes and older kids?
I was perusing an online adoption gallery the other day and a little boy (age 8) caught my eye because he looks so much like my natural sons. His name was so "unique" that my first thought was "that has to be changed immediately."
It wasn't a name typically associated with black folk like Ebony or Jamal which I think are fine names. This one was completely made up by the child's birthparents and was more on par with the  people express when they learn that Jermaine Jackson's kid is named "Jermajesty."
That said, I realize that an older child might be attached to his or her name so I was wondering if anyone here wanted to change his or her new child's name but ended up not doing it because of the wishes of the child.

We were drastic first name changes over age two is iffy. DD was an older baby placement, but older babies do recognize their name. Therefore, we changed DDs name but made sure the phonetic sounds were similar. Older adoptions, the child should be a part of the name change. Some are eager to change their name, some will change the spelling, or make the first name their middle name and so on. .
