Hi,
I am in Mississippi and a foster parent to two beautiful little girls ages 3 and 4 who are not sisters. My 3 year old came to us for adoption. They searched the ENTIRE family and NOBODY was fit to have her. Mom had her while incarcerated, and an aunt went and got her at birth and gave her to an elderly lady who was friend of the family and was raised by her until we got her at 2 1/2. She has 3 sisters who live with family and the mom does not have custody of any of them. We TPR on November 2, 2011. Her mom is back on drugs and living with a man. We found out yesterday that she is pregnant again with baby #5. Her aunt told DHS that mom wants to give this baby up for adoption. The baby will be addicted to drugs when born most likely as mom is on drugs. I have two questions:
1) If baby is taken at birth due to drugs will he/she automatically come to us since we have her sibling?
2) I have heard in Mississippi that if you have lost custody of your kids and have another child they automatically take the baby away when it's born because she has lost her other kids. Anyone have any knowledge on this?

1) No, nothing is "automatic" with the foster care system. I currently have 2 infant siblings and they have three previous siblings that have been adopted by three different families. None of these adopted families were even notified when the siblings we have went into the foster system. You should file your interest in the child immediately if you wish to be considered (that is something they won't aways tell you until after the fact).
2) I live in PA, so I have no knowledge of what your state does. I would never assume anything though. In our case, the birth parents never took their newborn to the hospital or doctor b/c they knew he would be taken away b/c he had drugs in his system and had serious health problems as a result. They moved around to different cities to avoid being found.
I wish you the best, as I know how hard foster parenting is and how heart breaking it is to see kids fall victim to the system.
