My kids came with it...I find it easy to use. I go to a store called quickeroo where they are made for wik and ebt.....They get everything for me pack it and load it for me in the car. I believe they are in California and idaho?? My agency only makes me go in every 3 months. I go 1st apt in the am all goes smooth.
When I go to normal stores with my wik I get evil stares at my wedding ring like how dare you have a diamond and get wik...If they only knew it was foster kids....:bullwhip:

We actually had the CEO of a nationally recognized grocery chain in our last pre-service training that I help with. I talked to him after class about how I do not shop in his stores because of the way I've been treated when I use WIC for my foster kids. I may be shopping there in the near future to see if our conversation made any difference!
Wow he came to the meeting! Very nice. You would think that people would be smart enough to know that in this economy more customers even with wik means more hours for the employees.. I had one argue with me that i couldn't get brown rice with it...I havent been back since...I told her its in the booklet and she said it has to be on the check....people...
Sometimes I wonder if they think I am committing fraud or that the checks are someone else s..

I would def try again! Makes me sad how judgmental people can be... The nicest cashier I ever had used wik for all three of her sons.. I asked her if every boy goes thru the saying ball constantly phase and she laughed and said every one of hers did...
My baby boy came to me obsessed with balls. Everything is a ball oranges watermelons cantaloupes tomato's and you know how kids scream for a fav item? Up and down the produce isle my angel is yelling ball.... LMAO.... the good news is that he loves fruits and veggies..especially round ones.

I had a few uncomfortable wic shopping experiences and was ready to just stop using it. I mentioned it to my sister who had been a cashier as a teen. She said she hated wic b/c it's a pain in the butt to enter into the register and they would get in big trouble if they messed up. She said it had nothing to do with the people using it. So I try not to take it personally anymore. And I make sure to put my steaks and lobster tails right next to my wic on the belt just to make things more fun!

All foster children ages 0-5 in the state of PA qualify for WIC. I wasn't aware of this until my last 2 foster children that were both infants. We were told we needed to sign up for it because the birth family was taking the checks and somehow exchanging them for drugs so they wanted us to get them switched to us. It greatly helped with the cost of formula for 2.
I will agree with those above. I have had some extremely rude comments from some cashiers (like are your trying to get more than you are entitled too? OR we have to carefully check each item to make sure people like you aren't stealing from us). Also a lot of times the cashiers don't know how to run the checks through the register and have to call for help which ties up the line and makes the people behind you mad.
We didn't initially get it with our two current kids, but did after a few months, though I forget how we got to that decision. Perhaps it was seeing it in our handbook while looking for something else. Also found out, through another source, that our youngest kid was failure to thrive at first ... this source suspected it was because mom was watering down the formula. Even after this kid went to live with a realtive, mom kept the checks. Seriously?!? I wouldn't have put it past her to have kept getting them, so I made sure to note, "They got WIC when they were with their parents" when I first went in.
I had no idea about how it worked going in, but got the hang of it pretty quickly. Also, after going in for the initial educational training, I was able to do the next one online. SOOOO much easier. I did find out that there is a choice of two groups of checks for us to get. The one has more milk but less flexibility in the other categories and included a lot of bread; the other included cheese and has a greater flexibility for us to use. The latter is the one we started out with otherwise I probably would have thought it wasn't worth it.
One odd, but understandable, fact is that each (foster) kid gets their own WIC checks instead of the whole sibling group getting it. Makes it a bit harder for me to do, but in reality it just means signing more checks. My local store was great about them and very patient while I was learning. So different from using coupons. Even though it says, "least expensive" it doesn't count if it is least expensive because of a sale.
In our state children over 12 months don' t get coupons for formula unless Dr signs a form for it, Dr refused to sign for my 14 month old, this weekend I just got her off the formula (thank god) now drinking whole milk. I have 3 months of coupons, will try to use them but if its a pain won' t continue the WIC program.
Babies generally don't need formula past 12 months unless there is a medical reason for it, in which the dr would be happy to sign the form for you.
Thanks everyone! I appreciate your responses! I think that is one of the first things we will try to do when we get a placement. Formula is expensive!
