New on here. I have been on the Foster Parent Board for years off and on. We have 10 children. 4 bio ( 3 my bio CC,1 his bio hispanic) 1AS that is CC, 3 AD's that are 1/2 h 1/2 cc,1 As 1/2 cc 1/2 h,1 As that is AA.
My youngest is AA.We have a horrible time with his skin. We have tried just about everything that anyone has suggested. The only thing that kind of works good is Aveno. Any one have anything else that might work? he is 5 1/2 and his skin gets so ashy and itchy. I lotion him daily sometimes twice a day.I feel so bad for him.
People here have been suggesting shea butter or coconut oil. I haven't tried it myself but several people have said that it works well. I use either Eucerin or Aquaphor on my son's skin and that works for him. But I think our climate is less drying than in places where it gets really cold in the winter.

Folks here just got me using coconut oil and our daughter's skin is looking great now :)
I'm a cococut oil fan. Get it from the salad oil aisle in the grocery store. JCM, um. . . I swear ours has no smell. It looks like veggie oil but it solidifies at what I consider room temp. I usually pour about 1/2 cup into a small bowl or dixie cup and refridgerate it. Before my shower, I take it out of the fridge and put it in the shower with me. By the time the shower is over it has melted enough that it pops right out and can be rubbed over the skin like a bar of soap. The moisture lasts all day for me (CC but dry) and DS (CC/AA). I also use it in DS's hair. It took about 3 days for our skin to adjust to it.

No smell?!? You've been robbed! lol
Found ours in the beauty section at Whole Foods, and it smells good enough to eat!

Thanks everyone. I guess we will find co**** oil and give it a try. When we lived in Florida we were able to get real shea butter and it worked great on my son and my DH. But since we moved to Kentucky we have not been able to find it. But we will try the co**** oil.
I use pure shea butter (not a shea butter lotion). It works really well. I put it on after his bath, and his skin stays moist for 24-48 hours.
We get the giant tubs of Nutiva coconut oil from vitacost.com. We cook with it/use it as a substitute for butter as well as on our skin and my son's hair.
I don't care for the smell of shea butter but I've used it and it does work. Do you have a health food store nearby? That's where I got raw shea butter when I tried it.
There are some shea butter lotions and soaps as well as some that are claiming to be *just* shea butter at vitacost.com. Example: Out Of Africa Vegan Organic Shea Butter Unscented -- 2 oz - Vitacost. I have used the out of africa soaps and I liked them.
I sound like a cheerleader for their website. :) We order from them a lot and they rock.
My three kids with African ancestry (AA/Asian, AA and AA/CC) are now 16, 18 and almost 23. Their favorite lotion is Malibu Hemp, but they will use several kinds, as long as they are free of any artificial fragrance. Perfumes are really irritating and drying.
When they were small, my favorites were Eucerin cream, or Stevens lotion, put on over damp skin.
If you are getting lotion on your son once or twice a day and he is still itchy, I wonder if it might be more than just dry skin, like there could be something that is irritating it, too. If the suggestions here don't help enough, maybe try adding some hydrocortizone cream, or asking your pediatrician for an opinion.
My granddaughter has had really dry and easily irritated skin, like her dad. I put hydrocortizone cream on her quite a bit and her parents have a prescription ointment, that helps a lot for the patches that are especially dry and itchy.
Good luck! I know how annoying and uncomfortable have dry itchy skin is!
