My husband and I just completed the application for an agency to begin the process of adopting a Polish child. We are excited and nervous as is probably standard:) We are curious if anyone could give us some information on the type of referrals we can expect. Our agency has told us that most children are overdiagnosed on the referral, but we would like some information that is not coming just from the agency.
We are especially nervous about fetal alcohol syndrome and institutionalization. I have read and been told that the Polish orphanages are not so bad as far as orphanages go with a 1 nun to 4 children ratio. Is there any chance we could bring home a perfectly healthy child?
Any information anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. We want to balance our own expectations as well as the expectations of our family.

Hi, You might want to indicate which agency you are using - it is my understanding that one specializes in older kids, the other in younger kids. Each group has different special needs. As you are probably aware, it is likely that the young non-SN/healthy children ages 1-2 are adopted domestically by Polish families. From what I understand, some of the older kids who may be available might be healthy as there is less of a likelihood that they are going to be adopted domestically solely due to their age. Children become available for int'l adoption only after they are passed over for domestic adoption. So I would say you should go into the process knowing what the odds are - that being said, there are certain kids available who in some broad sense are both healthy and have a SN, if their SN is correctable.
