I am SO frustrated, annoyed... you name it. This is not the first time I've posted on here but it has been awhile.
My hubby and I live in MD. We started our home study last September/October. We had turned in all of our paperwork. We had finished the interviews. All they had to do was WRITE the thing. We get a call that says that they were not going to finish our home study until we had the total sum of our anticipated adoption expenses. At the time we had approximately $2500 in the savings. We had a plan as to how we were going to raise the money. We were going to use a national agency that we thought was our best bet (less risk). Their reason was that we had no collateral- we didn't own a house or any other property and we had student loans.
After some months of researching, fundraising and saving, we are 70% there. We are also looking at agencies that are less than what we were originally planning.
My new frustration is that reading what others had gone through, this does not ever seem to be a problem with anyone else! UGH. I'm afraid that even if we get to the full amount, they will still say no. Problem is, they have all of our work and money paid for a home study. We don't want to have to pay for another home study! And we aren't even using this agency for placement. I don't understand why it matters so much to them, anyways.
Suggestions welcome on agencies less than $20,000 or anyone else commiserating.
Was it the social worker who told you this? If so, I would try the director of the agency. If the director agrees, I would check my contract with them. If the contract does not state that they will not complete the homestudy until you have the entire amount of money in the bank, I would point this out to the agency and ask them to either finish the homestudy or return my money (in its entirety). They might balk at this, but you have paid them for a service, and they have an obligation to follow through. If they refuse, it is like any other contract, and you may have to work to get it enforced. I would, however, be somewhat gentler in my approach than I am with some people who have not done what they were paid to do. Unfortunately, you have more at stake here, but they still have a responsibility to be clear and upfront with you about what they will be doing.
