I had just finished a blog entry about my son Benjamin's expectations for what a sibling will be like. Being an only child, he has no real concept. I can't help but wonder how he will transition from being an only child to a big brother when we adopt his sister. This made me wonder what other people encountered with their children's reactions?

Our DD was 10.5yr when our oldest son joined our family (he was almost 4yrs). On the first day of his weekend visit here she cried and said " I didn't know it would be so hard to share you". After we brought him back to his foster home she came home sat on his bed and cried for him. In those 2 days he became her brother. She had wanted a sibling for so long she insisted he call her "sissy" instead of her name. A year and a half later we got a call for a newborn baby boy at the hospital waiting for us. DD had never really liked babies, but it was love at first sight. I know at times it has been hard for her to share us, but she loves her brothers. DD is now 16yrs and gets rather annoyed with her brother (9yrs and almost 4yr old), but I think that is pretty normal for her age.

I added a sibling group of 6 (4-10 yrs old) and had a 4 yr old. It was hard but we prepared her by talking a lot for months about how things would be and possible behaviors we would could expect. It was difficult but she did very well and loves them.
I'm quite curious as well. We have an 11 yr old daughter and are looking to adopt a girl between the ages of 7 & 10. Our DD "says" she knows that the transition will be hard, etc but I dont think she really knows. We've talked about sharing parents and she says she is OK with it - but I'm not so sure. We have just started our process but have had many many conversations with her about this and she helped make the decision. BUT - when we are out at the store, she will say - "ooo, I hope my sister likes this", etc. I just feel like she has rose colored glasses on - but then again, maybe we all do!
