My son has the medical card and he is on our home insurance. We have been treated horribly numerous times due to having this card. (including canceling doctor appointments on us because they tried running his old medical card before the appointment to see if it worked .)
We have cleared up many of the problems, but today we were at Wal-mart picking up my sons Medical Card glasses that took 2 months to come in and we are only allowed to pick them up on Wednesdays from 5-8.
Well we went to pick them up and there was a clip board that said MEDICADE GLASSES PICK UP. and then we had to write down my sons name. It was just sitting on the reception desk like a sign in sheet. So basically I could see the name of every person that picked up their glasses that day and I now know that they have the medical card.
I was very upset and asked if after we picked up our glasses if we could scratch the name out because it is no ones business if my son is a patient there and if he has the medical card. She told me no because the doctor needs to see the list.
I asked her if she thought that it was a violation of my sons privacy and she said she didn't know. I said I thought that it was and she told me she would keep the list behind the desk which still did not solve the problem because anyone who needed to sign the list would still see my sons name.
I went shopping for about 20 minutes and as I was leaving I noticed that the sign in list was back to sitting out on the desk.
Aside from coming in at 7:55 to pick up his glasses, is there anyway to avoid this and is it against the Hippa Laws?
i would guess you could talk to the store manager. they do listen. and if that doesn't work, call the district manager.
what insurance you do or do not have is no one's business. not so sure it violates HIPPA, but i'm just a teacher making a guess. it does, however, violate the laws of good manners and decency no matter how you look at it.

I believe each Walmart has its own optomotrist who's independent......BUT, even after phoning the store manager, I'd still call Walmart headquarters....clear to the top.
It IS no one's business what type of insurance anyone has; but what's even worse is to have it set up at a separate time, etc and the list for everyone to see.
Beyond HIPPA (which I personally find more problematic than helpful) it's just no way to conduct business in a tactful way.
Sincerely,
Linny
I agree with you that this is horrible. I'd call someone at the State, as the State Attorney General. Ask them what the appropriate entity to take such a complaint to is. Then do that.
I might just happen to be back at Walmart before I made the complaint with a camera phone, and get a photo of the clipboard sitting out on the desk. (Otherwise put, make sure you have that photo evidence first, because otherwise it's your word against theirs.)
I would also ask my state complaint board to make sure this policy is changed at every Walmart in my state.
