Is this possible? We are expecting to be licensed at the end of the year but I won't qualify for FMLA until April. Can I take leave as soon as I'm eligible even if I've had a child for a while at that time?

The short answer is yes, according to this, you can take FMLA anytime in the year following the placement of a child in your home, though it has to be consecutive time.
