Hi everybody,
I'm not sure if this is posted in the right place.
my husband & I are starting the process of adopting through foster care. we were foster parents, but decided to adopt through foster care.
I was wondering with other parents who adopted through foster care. How long did it take until you were matched with your son/daughter? what age range did you want to your child to be? Do you get financial help for the child? Or is that just with special needs kids?
Has anybody gone with Adoption Photolisting?
Is there anybody who has not been matched with a child, any adoptions that fell through?
I know that it can take up to 3 years, I guess it depends on the age of the child, if there is a match.
What all happened with your home study? my husband & I did our foster home study. I'm wondering what else is involved with adoption home study?
my husband & I just finished our CPR/First aid training; I have to send that in. Our other application paperwork has been sent in. I'm wondering what else has to be done.
Any information, experiences would be great.
Thanks,
Bonnie

My 7 y/o was adopted through foster care (placed with us just before she turned 2). It took about a year to get the placement. We were called for several others prior to that, but ultimately did not take them because of considerations specific to those cases (we had two preschoolers at the time, so it limited our options). Our was a strange case, so it took several years to get the adoption completed. The biofamily is very good at working the system, as they have been doing so for multiple generations, so the adoption got delayed a few times.
I do not get assistance through the state with her, except for Medicaid.
We tried to get a placement through Adoption Photolisting. The process seemed to go great as far as the matching service & the cw in the other state. Ultimately we didn't get the placement, though, because my CW didn't do the ICPC as requested & the judge finally ordered the child be placed elsewhere after giving my county 6 months & still not receiving the paperwork.
My adoption HS was really no different from the foster HS, they just had slightly different forms to fill out.

We have adopted once through foster care and now have a second FD in our home that we are planning to adopt soon. It's hard to say what the average wait time is to get a placement. That really depends on many different factors:
the county you are licensed in to foster
The type of foster license you get
The type of children you are open to; ie: special needs, behavioral needs, physical needs, minority status, age of child, open to sibling sets or not, etc.
In our case we wanted to adopt for sure, we were licensed in a very populated county with a very big city in it, we were open to any race, we wanted a girl (as we already had 4 sons by birth) and we wanted her healthy enough to keep up with us and the boys. We were open to many behaviors and set our age rage from 3 years to 9 years, my youngest son was 10 at the time and did not want a sibling older than him, (birth order and all).
We were matched with our first daughter within 2 months she was 5 years old and the second time around we were matched with our second daughter, she was 4 years old, in 5 months.
My words of advice: Keep your heart and mind open throughout this entire process.
