My mom and I have been talking about her and my dad becoming foster parents. Only thing is my dad is a truck driver and is only home every 2-3 weeks. We are in NC, and a curious if he would have to go through the classes or if my mom and I would be able to do it?
He would have to be able to go through classes because he is in the home.
If you are going to help them you would also benefit from going through the whole process... but your home would not be approved so they would not be able to stay overnight, etc in YOUR home. Instead if you wanted to watch them youd have to stay in your parents home.

Here, he would have to go through everything because he would also be a foster parent (couples do these things together or not at all). My daughter is also a respite provider which required her doing several classes on top of the family member background checks. Here, you do have the choice to have your home approved if you do respite only. Otherwise, you'd do it at the foster home. Babysitting requires much less than respite does but usually has limitations based on state or agency standards. Our agency allows a babysitter to watch a child only two 4-hour segments of time monthly.
Our state will allow foster parents discretion on overnight care. More than 24 hours and the person has to be background checked.
All members of a household over the age of 18 have to be fingerprinted and background checked and the heads of household will need to go through the license process. In our state marriage determines that.
