Our family is just starting the process to become foster parents. We are in New York. I would love to know who has gone through and what I should expect. What should we start doing now to prepare for the homestudy? Anything and everything.

hi!
My family is getting certified for the 2nd time now. We fostered for 22 months, adopted our first kiddo and then decided to take a break, moved and now are recertifying with an agency.
First is an orientation meeting usually 2-3 hours to give you a very brief overview of fostering and to weed out people.
Then you will probably take classes. When we first started we had to take 27 hrs of classes in 2 weekend. SOme places do 8 weeks of 2-3 hours one night a week. However my state now only requres 15 to start and then the rest within 3 months or something like that... every state is different
Then you will get fingerprinted, take CPR/ first aid and do a ton of paperwork.
Then will come the home study. Our first time it took place over a few weeks and 3-4 meeting. The first we talked about our childhoods and how my hubby and I met. THe 2nd meeting she split us up and asked about our marriage and goals and why we wanted to foster. Then we had a home inspection (9 pages of a check list). We had to fix a few things so she came back for a 4th visit, checked our house for the corrections and had our home study all typed up for us to review and sign that it was accurate.
It then went before a review board and we were licensed within a week. I think it took us about 5 months from our first class to being certified and then 1 month for our first kiddo. This time we started in april and are waiting to have our home inspected and to update our home study but the cw who does home studies has been on vacation for a month...
Thank you!!! I am so excited I can't hardly handle it. When I told her where we lived she said "yay, we don't have many families in your area." We are going to do 0-4, so I'm thinking we will get another twin bed and have a crib on hand. 5 months sounds like such a long time. :woohoo:
Hello! We're in upstate NY and will be starting our MAPP classes soon which are 3 hrs. every week for 10 weeks.
Our first meeting someone from the home finding unit came to the house and went over our finances and looked over the house. At that point she approved us to start the MAPP classes. Not everyone gets approved :/

The social worker will be here on the 11th, and we start mapp classes the next week. Praying it all goes smoothly.
I'm on LI. I did MAPP classes ( 2-3 hours over 10 weeks); fingerprints and homestudy. CW came twice; first time, she looked at house and finances. Second time, it was more indepth with age, race and religion. She also asked about siblings and my dad who lived in another state at that time. Took 5 months; certified in July, first placement in October. good luck!!
How are the classes, Mgnny12816? We filled out initial paperwork in the beginning of July, and NO answer/contact yet.
I am so antsy!!
Let me know if this isn't allowed but we're in our 3rd week of MAPP classes and I've been blogging about some of what we learned each week if either of you are interested.
