I know I'm new, but in the bit of browsing around the forums I've done, I haven't noticed anyone from CT yet.
If there's anyone out there; where are you in the process? How has your experience with DCF been?
We are halfway through the classes and DH and I both think they are great. I am glad they require them because I don't know how anyone could possibly be prepared to parent one of these children, or be prepared to maintain the family connections that are so important. It's extremely helpful to know what DCF expects and requires, on all the various aspects of what you're getting involved in. Our point of view has changed drastically, in just a couple of months.
We are looking to adopt, so I'd be especially interested to hear experiences on that. I think our biggest decision right now is figuring out how much legal risk we're open to, which our licensing social working is going to help us determine. We are looking at an infant to 4 or 5 age range, so we know we need to be willing to accept legal risk or we'll never get a phone call with a placement.
I hope there are other CT folks around here!
we are from CT!! just getting started though- had our orientation meeting in December, passed the initial background checks, had the first home visit, and interview just last week! We are also hoping to adopt as well. A good friend of ours went the low legal risk route and had two placements within months of opening up their home each time, both of which were adopted, so it does happen! We don't have a preference on gender or race, and are open to moderate legal risk. We don't feel we are qualified quite yet for medically complex though. As for age range we are looking for the same thing.
There is a lot to learn, but there is a lot of support for foster/ adoptive parents as well. I'm looking forward to going to the group meetings put on by CAFAP. Our first one is this monday.
Our certification class will start either end of Feb or early March.
are you in the western or eastern half of the state? We are in the eastern half. Nice to meet you!

Nice to meet you, too! Good luck with your journey!
I'm a bit jealous of how quickly things have happened for you so far, I have to say. We attended open house on February 4th and it was about 4 months later that we finally got a home visit scheduled. We checked in periodically, asking about that status of our background checks and got the "we're still working on it." We finally had our first visit/interview in July and then it was a few more months after that when we were invited to start the class. It'll be over a year from start to finish for us.
It's nice to hear stories about people getting low legal risk placements not too long after getting licensed. I'm not getting my hopes up and expect it to take a while, if ever. Because we have two young daughters (and we're both almost 40 years old), we are a bit nervous about the high legal risk situation, and are pretty conservative regarding behavioral issues, etc.. We also have no race or gender preference.
I'm not sure if we're considered western or eastern because we live smack in the middle of northern CT. LOL We are in Hartford County, though, so we attend class in Hartford.

Sorry it's taken you so long! I think we are an anomaly in our county (new London county) or they are just really desperate.
Excited that you will be finishing up classes soon!
How did you make out in the storm? We are still getting dumped on. Over 2 feet this close to the shore.

They had actually told us that we weren't a priority because our goal was low/no-risk adoption, rather than fostering or foster-to-adopt. If we were applying to be foster parents, rather than strictly adoptive parents, things likely would have moved a lot more quickly. We didn't realize that you can change your mind as your taking the class, which they actually expect people to do, as your learning about all the options and figuring out what's best for you. Had we known that, we would have put foster-to-adopt down on our initial application because it looks like that is what we're going to be getting licensed for after all (moderate to low risk). Oh well, we're almost there now... if the weather will start cooperating and we can actually resume our classes!
We only got about a foot of snow up where we are. It wasn't bad at all. It wasn't even that windy. My 7 year old was outside playing in the snow around lunchtime yesterday, while my husband was snowblowing, and her 5 year old sister opted to stay in and take a nap (and she never naps). I would have chosen the nap, too. LOL They ended up cancelling school again today, which surprised me. I don't think the parking lots were in good enough condition yet.... at least, that's my guess.
