I have a son who is 26 months old. Many of the people in my like are making a big deal of him not really talking. He says a handful of words consistently. I'm really not that worried. My eight year old only had about 20 words when he was almost three, and only my husband and I could understand him. Now you can't get the child to stop talking. The toddler has met or exceeded all of his other milestones. I really think he will talk when he is ready. Now the doctor wants to refer him to a speech therapist. What are your thoughts? Should I let him grow at his own pace or try early intervention?

Well, therapy won't harm your son. Whether it's necessary or not is up to you. From everything I've read it's totally okay for kids not to have a wide vocabulary until they're about three. If they don't have it by then that may be cause for concern. But from my experience, as long as he can speak enough to get what he needs (food, water, picked up, etc.) he's probably just fine.
