Hello...I have a question about foster care. My daughter was asked last summer to care for her 10 week old cousin. The mother relapsed and CPS stepped in and took custody. The father is a previous addict and was in jail for burglary. The mother has disappeared but now the father is out and wants custody. He currently has supervised visitation, of which he shows about half the time. When the baby returns from the grandparent doing the supervision she is dirty, exhausted and hungry. CPS is constantly giving my daughter mixed messages...like the father is doing well (he's been clean since Sept 28), has a job and is living at home with the grandparent. But then they tell her they want her to file for custody, or do the paperwork needed for adoption. A month ago they told her not to give up and they thought they would be terminating rights by next summer.
Today the CPS worker said the father wants her Christmas Eve and morning. He didn't bother to ask for a visit for Thanksgiving. She is heartbroken and ready to give up. CPS had said in the past the home was not approved for nights but apparently is when it is Christmas? And in the same visit gave her paperwork to become foster parents to adopt from the system. The baby is now 7 months old. I worry about the roller coaster stress for her and suggested turning the baby over now into care but she doesn't want to do that to her. Any suggestions? We live in NY.
