I am only speaking for agency adoption, but there may be others who can tell you how to get started if you are planning to work with a lawyer instead of an agency. Good luck! Oh -- also read books -- in my experience the local bookstores offer little in the way of good adoption books. The best source is Perspectives Press --- a publisher that sort of specializes in this area. Also a book called Adopting After Infertility by Patricia Irwin Johnston is really helpful and a book called Adoption (?) by Lois Gilman is really good. I am not sure about the title of the Gilman book --- I loaned mine to someone, but both are available through Amazon.com Best wishes!
