Dear Friends:
My biological father had been in the ARMY in Vietnam and Germany.
I was actually conceived in the barracks in Heidelberg!
My bio. mother (with whom I was reunited in 1998) remembers only my father's first name (Dennis).
I have written to the military records center in St. Louis several times, but they claim they need more details in order to provide any information on my father.
I have NOT told them that I am an adoptee on a mission, as I don't want them to think I plan to disrupt Dennis' life. Really, I just want to meet him, or at least get medical information from him or extended family.
The center in St. Louis claim they need Dennis' rank, unit, etc., but I know very little about the ARMY's structure.
Why they can't simply send me a list (however lengthy) of everyone stationed at Heidelberg in April or May of 1971 I do not know.
If you can help me in any way, PLEASE e-mail me at ASSAILANTPOODLE@YAHOO.COM.
Best wishes, Annika

It can be so frustratiing can't it. My father was an American Airman based near London U.K. ( just how many William Wilsons were based at 'west drayton' airbase in 1958?) I know his name, rank and even In which town his parents were living. I can't do anything until I can get his social security number or military number. All I want to do is find out about him and where I come from. The way the military treat it you would think that i was after secret documents.
Good luck with your search xx
Dear Jonathan:
Given as much information as you do about your biological father, you shouldn't have too much difficulty getting information about him through the military records bureau in St. Louis, Missouri.
The thing is, you can't tell them you're an adoptee.
That's when they put up their defenses [no pun intended].
If you pretend to be an old friend/USAF buddy or something, they might give you his current information.
There's a helpful book called "How to Locate Anyone Who Is or Has Been in the Military" by Johnson and Knox.
It is not adoption-focused, but there is one chapter on adoption searches.
Again, you should use the generic guidelines in this book: Unfortunately, the truth does not prevail in our type of search.
Also, there are various military Web sites but, as a civilian, I have not found them to be very helpful.
If you know your father's first and last names, you can do a nationwide whitepages search; If his parents had been living in the USA, you can narrow down the search by state/town (but I would first look up ALL William Wilsons in the country).
Check out that book and look on-line for Air Force sites.
If you need more advice [from someone who has tried and failed but not abandoned hope], E-mail me at ASSAILANTPOODLE@YAHOO.COM.
p.s. Do you know your bio. mom? If so and [G-d willing] she's still alive, maybe she can help.
GOOD LUCK!
