Fannie's birth mother said that her name was "Ludelle Davis" but I'm not sure if this was her real name. She was a pretty young blonde woman who said that she was "from up delta way" (possibly Columbus?) and that she couldn't take care of the 3 year-old daughter she already had, much less another mouth to feed, so she was looking for a good home for little Fannie. One of the nurses at Charity told "Ludelle" that she had a friend who couldn't have babies and that she would ask her to come down. The woman was Willie Oliver, an amazingly loving woman who adopted little Fannie and raised her as her own. She and her husband Robert changed their daughter's name to Faye Ludelle Oliver. However, the baby's birth father, a man Willie remembers only as "Mr. Dowdy", wanted his daughter back. The Olivers hired a lawyer H.C. McCabe who helped them keep Faye. I have finally figured out that "H.C. McCabe" is Henry C. McCabe who was a prominent lawyer in Vicksburg, but I haven't been able to find out anything about his practice. If anyone has any information about Ludelle Davis, Mr. Dowdy or any of the circumstances i have described, I would love to hear from you, as my family is very curious about our past.
