We can't afford the expensive private/open adoptions, so have contacted DFS and are starting that route. We are going to talk with a social worker this week to get our questions answered. What should we expect? We are already very nervous and this is just the beginning.Thank you,Amy

Try to get to know other foster parents who have adopted in your area, as they can be a huge support. Don't feel pressured to accept the first call you get--know what you can handle and what is best for your family. If you don't start getting calls after you have been licensed for a while call your licensing worker and ask him/her to send out an email notifying other caseworkers you have an opening. I know at first I felt like I was being a pest, calling about once a week or so, but it paid off. We got a beautiful 2 day old baby that ended up being available for adoption. I know that the same can happen for you.
