Our Ped. perscribed adderall XR for our 10 yr old w/ADHD
This will be her 1st time on Meds for ADHD as we are newly diagnosed.
What should I expect from this drug? Ped says this is his 1st choice of medicine it usually has very few side effects.
Any comments would be appreciated. We are hoping for good results.

My son, 12, came to us on Adderall XR (along with 4 other meds which he's now off of). As both his teacher and his mom, I will tell you there is a significant difference in his ability to focus when on the meds. The one day we forgot, he did this sort of wild hyena giggling all day, and his classmates really thought he'd lost it.
Having said that, the same day he had a phone call with his cw, and he was able to chat, chat, chat about all kinds of things that had happened for him. Normally (on meds) he is fairly subdued in his chatter...I kind of liked it the other way as mom.
His appetite is very suppressed once the meds kick in. He eats miniscule lunches then makes up for it at dinner.
Our goal is to wean him this summer if we can. Adderall is so potent that they do not give refills, you have to get an RX monthly. We figured this first year it'd be best not to let his ADHD factor into any behavioral issues we saw, but we do hope to be med free if we can.
Good luck.

my son is on adderall xl too, but one pill is supposed to last 12 hrs. He gets 3 a day! when we skipped one before we had the paper signed for the school to administer a dose ,the teacher was calling me about him. now when my husband went to parents nite she was thanking us for getting the meds right. He had developed a verbal tic on ritalin and I saw it again over the summer on this so he was prescribed tenex . I hate the meds but what can you do. she is looking into straterra but says if this is working lets see how it goes.
Our daughter is on Adderal also. She is very shy, but when she does not take her meds, she becomes much more friendly and outgoing. She also seems to find humor in everything when she is drug-free and is less likely to be sulky. On the negative side, she cannot stop humming, chattering or giggling when she does not take her meds. She will make noise constantly. She can be annoying without the meds, because she loves to tease and doesn't listen and is giddy all over the place. Also, with the meds, she may have trouble sleeping, especially if we give them to her later in the morning. There doesn't seem to be an issue with focusing though. She can still do one thing for an hour or more when she is med-free, she'll just sing or talk to herself or whatever while she is doing it. We lower her dosage everytime we see her doctor and would like to get her off the meds altogether. They seem to be more for us than for her. I cannot imagine the drugs are good for her physically and hope that time and behavior modification can calm some of the more annoying behaviors when she doesn't have medication. Also, we don't like that she believes she cannot function without a pill, like she does. She is very dependant on taking them and will tell us she cannot behave without them. This mindset will be one of the hardest things to overcome, I think.
