I'm looking to find an adoption counselor in our area for a friend that is going through a tough time accepting that her birthmother gave her up when she was young. She's searching for her at the moment, but is becoming more upset each day and feels like it is hopeless. Where can I turn her?
Thanks,
smileygirl :)

We just went through the "counselor search" in our area to find someone to help my 5 year old who has just "changed personalities" since starting kindergarten. She is very aggressive and physical at school, and unable to handle herself at all. This is not the girl I know!
Anyway, first off, I don't know that you'll find an "adoption counselor." I would look for someone who is well-versed in attachment disorders. I would also ask around and see who is recommended. I was fortunate to find a woman who works a lot with children, was adopted herself and had to deal with the issues firsthand, and believes entirely that every adoptee suffers some degree from separation at birth from the birthmother.
It would be helpful to know the age of your friend, if they are Christian or not, and what general metropolitan area they live in.

Hi Smileygirl:
You are a good friend to help your friend find support. Here is a web site that can help you locate a counselor for you friend. If there is not a counselor in the city that she lives she can call the one closest and ask them to refer her to one in her area. When she starts to make phone calls she can ask if they have experience with adoption related issues.
Here is the web site: http://www.adoptioncounselor.com/
She can click on the link for find a counselor.
She may receive some support in an Adoptee Support Group. She can look for one in her area on http://www.adoptiondirectory.com.
We have online support groups in our chat rooms at http://www.adoptionchat.com. We discuss similar issues on the Wed night chat at 7:00 pm pac.
Please tell her more than one type of support is a good way to go.
Hope she will make the effort and take the steps towards betterment. She will be in my prayers.
Warm regards,
