I am so sorry that so many of us have had to deal with this situation. By writing about our experience we hope we will save other families from the heartache and disappointment of a scam.
We were contacted by Kim this weekend. She told us she was abused, had no place to go, hadn't eaten all day, and that she was due Nov 16 and wanted to place her baby, a girl, with us. Obviously she wanted money and we told her that we needed her to talk with our attorney first. Because of past experiences we wanted to take some time to evaluate the situation and talk with her a little more to determine if this was legitimate. At some point she asked us if we had caller ID, a BIG RED FLAG.
We referred her to a shelter but she said she had been turned away because they were full. She wanted us to come pick her up because she had no place to go and was hungry, when we said no she asked us to wire money. She claimed that she had a prepaid roundtrip ticket that she had won on a radio station, and that she would be willing to use it so we wouldn't have to pay for her travel expenses. Againshe asked for money to hold her over while waiting for our attorney to contact us. As the afternoon progressed we caught her in a few lies so I confronted her, eventually I asked her to find another family because we wanted a relationship with our birth family and we didnŒt think the relationship would work because of the trust issues. Believe me this was not an easy thing to do, we have been waiting for four years for a baby.
Tonight we found someone in California that adopted her last child, a baby boy. Kim contacted him a couple of months ago, she told him she was pregnant, was due in April (she told us Nov 16th was the due date) and she wanted to place the baby with him. He paid for her hotel, food and other incidentals for a while, until she refused to provide proof of pregnancy. He even gave her a round trip ticket to CA. but she never showed up at the airport. He stopped payments a few weeks ago. After hearing our story he told us that Kim was on Parole in Arkansas and had gotten out of jail recently. He called his contact at the police station (he is an attorney) to file a police report and try to get her arrested for fraud and theft by deception.
Kim claims that she found us on adoption.com.
She's clearly running a scam. We used our caller ID to track her down. A hotel employee told us that she had been placing lots of outgoing calls. This person was kind enough to look at the log and found that Kim had called our 800 number many times, she was also amazed to find ten or eleven other 800 numbers. She has been at this last hotel for more than 10 days. One of the other hotels told us she has had people make room reservations then she would call trying to get their credit card number and drivers license info. One manager told us when she stays someone else always pays for the room. Another told us that she was a large woman who smoked heavily and drank she did not look pregnant nor did she act like it. Kim also called us from a cellular phone asking us for money. By the way if you get a call from a cell phone in the 501 area code be careful, it could be Kim.
If by chance you have had dealings with her and have sent money or paid for a hotel room please file a police report in Little Rock or in Palaski County where she is on probation. Your report will be kept confidential. The more supporting documentation the police get the greater the chances are of getting her off the street so she wont break any more of our hearts.

I was just contacted by a police detective from Arkansas; Ms Hurd informed us that Kim is a prostitute who uses several aliases. Kim has been running this scam for a long time but they have not had a break in the case until now. Due to certain laws their hands have been tied. Ms. Hurd is contacting the FBI in hopes they can help catch Kim breaking Federal Laws as well as State Laws, in doing so they will be able to put her away for a long time.
IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION PLEASE CALL DETECTIVE HURD.

I received a call a little while ago from another birth family, they were at the same hotel as Kim was and they were paying her expenses. The were found on adoption.com. The hotel manager that I spoke with today became very alarmed when she saw the phone records earlier, it turns out Kim has called 29 other 800 numbers. When Kevin came down stairs the manager remembered that he was there to adopt a baby.
Low and behold it was the same baby she was promising the rest of us. Kevin and his wife drove 11 hours to come meet with her, they felt secure since she was not asking for large sums of money and they never imagined this could happen to them.
Long story short she was calling many of us and sharing her sob story while Kevin and his wife were taking her out to eat and paying for her hotel and other expenses. As if that wasnҒt enough his credit card is missing and there are charges on it that he did not make. He called the police and detective Hurd; they are on their way to the hotel.
Kevin says she is very pregnant.
PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT SHE MAY BE CALLING BECAUSE SHE REALLY NEEDS THE HELP THIS TIME! She has served jail time and is a known prostitute so she may not know who the real father of this baby is. The last baby was drug exposed.
I have received a few emails from a few of you who have been contacted. Thank you for speaking up.
TOGTHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
We will keep you posted.
