WELCOME TO THE SEARCH AND REUNION MESSAGE BOARD!
Two types of scams are on ALL adoption message boards on the internet:
1) Many people have been scammed by someone pretending to be the relinquished child or birthmother. Click on this link for more information: http://forums.adoption.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=98290. These scammers change their user names and email addresses frequently so be aware of any suspicious contact …especially on a Private Message option.
2) Others scammers post saying they are a FREE SEARCH ANGEL resource when in fact they are not. If you have been contacted by someone who claims to be a free search angel or refers you to someone that they say is a free search angel and then you are asked for a donation or reimbursement of expenses before they will give you any information…be sure and report this person to a moderator. Another ruse is…”this person did my search…you should contact them”; or “contact so and so they found my mother in 2 hours/2 days/etc.” These are solicitation ad’s posted by the scammer themselves and violate the Terms of Service for this website. The scammers use many multiple identities and email addresses to avoid detection by the administration of the different websites.
If you cannot complete your search using an honest free search angel group such as Volunteer Search Network and you feel that you need to hire a professional service ALWAYS make sure you that you get a signed contract in writing FIRST guaranteeing that you do not pay for an unresolved search. Get references and contact them.
Post as little information as possible on a public message board. Recommended information is date of birth, gender and city and state of birth. Keep the rest of the information to yourself so that when someone contacts you that you will have private information to compare to see if it is a true match.

Hi!
I live in Tampa and helping a young girl find her birthfamily. She was born in Tampa 2 days before my own niece in the same hospital. How do I start this search?

INFORMATION THAT IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR STATE:
“Non-identifying information” is information from your adoption file about your birth parents. It generally includes ages, marital status, states of birth, education, religion, occupations and a physical description of your birth parents. It should also include the reason for relinquishment and may include information about your aunts, uncles and grandparents. It is called “non-identifying information” because it does not include any identifying information such as names, addresses or social security numbers. If you already have your non-identifying information but it is information given to your adoptive parents at the time of your adoption you should re-apply for the non-identifying information. Agencies are giving out much more comprehensive information now that they did in the past.
“Mutual Consent Registry” is a registry where adoptees and birth parents can register the adoption information. If both parties register normally the agency responsible for the registry will notify both parties that consent has been given to contact each other. Adoptees, adoptive parents and birth parents may register. There is a $35 (waivable) registration fee. A copy of your driver’s license or notarized proof of identification is required and you must state your role in the adoption (adoptee, adoptive parent or birthmother or birth father). To request a registration form contact this office:
Florida Adoption Reunion Registry (FARR)

WARNING: Many searching adoptees and birth parents have noticed that Florida was one of the states that changed information on the amended birth certificate so that it may not reflect the true date of birth or place of birth.
