We trusted Amber Stime-Kassa and her "agency" African Cradle. We ended up with two "sisters" who weren't related, not only hated each other but hated white people in general, were at least 5 years older than stated and never wanted to be adopted in the first place - among other things. All this for $17,000 and disruption of the adoptions that almost cost us our health, family and relationship.
Thank God that the Ethiopian government found out before others were, in MY opinion, scammed.

My husband and I read a recent (Dec. 2002) article in the NYT Sunday magazine that touched us so much that we're considering adopting from Ethiopia or Sierra Leone. But we want to talk to someone who's adopted an African child to know what it's really like and what might be in store for us. We're eager to gather information so we can get at least one child into a family again.

There are two agencies that can still work in Ethiopia. Adoption Advocates International is one and the other one you can find by entering the topic on a search. Seirra Leon is way more costly (but a lot of orphanes with the war and all) Ethiopia also has alot.
The people at AAI were helpful and they have infants. They have people on their web sight and they will give you numbers of other people to call.
I did not go through with it though.
Hello. I was surprised to read about African Cradle. I remember they used to have many children listed in 1999 over on PIHS.
I too read the NYT Magazine article (the lastest edition of "Adoptive Families" also has some of the article) and was touched.
I would like to know the approximate costs of adopting a child from Ethiopia.
Is adopting from Ethiopia more costly than adopting from Eastern Europe or Asia?
If you wish to email me privately, please do so. My email is:

My cost was $17,000 in money and years of nightmares, tears and pain that their adoption and later displacement cost me because the lies we were told.
No adoption is easy or without it's challenges, but for the emotional stress involved on both sides (us and those Ethiopian children) - I am just thankful that both the US and Ethiopian government closed African Cradle down. The director (Amber Stime-Kassa) is not the "innocent Ethiopian victim" she attempts to be - so if she begins another agency, be careful! Very careful!

What happend to you? I sent some money to AC and was going to use them but decided to stick with American Foster Care children.
Did your kids disrupt after getting here, or did they never make it to the US?
Did the US government send them back or something? The way I understand it Ethiopia is currently closed down and review both agencies (I was told Ethiopia does this every couple of years)
I was wondering because 1. I sent money to them and almost used them and 2. I always felt kind of bad about stoping that adoption.
My e-mail is Rindava@earthlink.net if you or any one wants to respond. Thanks
The children came, hated us upon sight because we were white. Refused to speak English or even learn it, attempted to injury us and our other children, and insisted that they had family in Ethiopia and never wanted to be adopted or come to America.
We found NO support with African Cradle and were told, "they're your kids now, you deal with them". And so we did, we found support in our aftercare agency and they were instrumental in assisting us to find new homes for the children. African Cradle did NOTHING to assist us and actually were found to be fraudulently doing adoptions in Ethiopia using ANOTHER agency's credentials.
There were many children who were in the process of being adopted when African Cradle failed and the children were sent to other orphanages, many adoptions were disrupted and many people were both without funds and children.
Thank God that you got out before you had any more dealings with them.
