My chihuahua started making a weird cry/gasp for breath tonight that woke the whole house. We found her laying on her side unable to move. When we picked her up and put her on the floor she wont walk, eat, drink, or lay down. She just stands there with sad little eyes. We dont have a 24 hour vet within an hours drive and that just isnt possible to do tonight. I just made her comfortable in a baby boppy and a playpen and hopefully, if she is dying, she will go peacefully. If not any idea what would have caused this? Did she have a stroke? Will be taking her to the vet in the morning.

we're lost too many dogs over the years
how old is he?
immediate thoughts - if it was sudden, it might be a pinched nerve or something soft tissue wise. if that is the case, rest may help
looking at the gums is a good start. they should be pink
is his heart racing?
eyes clear?
if he made it through the night, i'd bring in into your vets today
best of luck to you
My maltepoo did that a few years ago, was having seizures. She ended up having to have a blood transfusion or wouldn't have made it. Never figured out what caused it. Hope your furry baby is okay :(
I'm thinking of you, we love our pets too so I hope that your dog is going to be ok or that she can have peace and comfort. :(

My chihuahua does that occasionally sounds like a asthma attack almost. Mine is fine, just a little overweight from the kids feeding her even though they've been told not to.
The breathing and standing make me think quick of Congestive Heart Failure. This is not always fatal and can be treated for a while.
I'm so sorry. Please update us when you can!
We had a yorkiepoo that would act like he was coughing up a hairball, but it wasnt . Snort, hack, & breath weird for a few minutes a few times a day. As he got older it got worse. He had heart issues, but was older so didn't want to put him through a bunch of junk (he had been attacked by bigger dog & also had a collapsed lung & some broken ribs) He lived to be nearly 14 & died peacefully in his sleep. Hope your furry friend is okay.

Unfortunately the forum was not working on my computer all night and morning after I posted the thread so I didnt get any of your advice until now. Thank you all for support.
She is about 15 years old, and has been in our family for 13 of those years. The vet said she had seizure. She gave us a few reasons that she could be having them, all which make sense. One thing for sure is she is overweight. We know this but her previous owner was an elderly man whose guardian caregiver was abusive toward her. She refused to buy her food so he fed her his bologna at lunch and because of that she has never been able to eat anything but table food... so she doesnt get the most balanced diet.
Thankfully this morning she is walking more and has eaten a few bites and drank a whole bowl of water. We will just continue to watch her.
If she goes our family will surely miss her. She might be small but she is one mighty watchdog!
Romans- I saw your post this a.m. but didn't have time to respond before leaving for the day-- I have a 13 year old Chihuahua --he also has seizures--I was going to suggest that your dog possibly had a seizure.
When Chico has a seizure his eyes get big and his pupils dilate, his muscles tense up and he shakes and he licks like he is licking an ice cream cone and slobbers at the same time. He seems to be scared yet unaware of his surroundings. They have been happening less frequently. When they do happen I keep all the other animals away from him and talk softly and pet him gently to try and calm him. The longest one lasted about 5 minutes.
Hopefully your pup will be 'one and done'----
as for being a watchdog-- that must be part of the Chihuahua nature- Chico weighs less than ten pounds and has no qualms about getting in the 80 pound Boxer next door's face.

Yes, thank you, I hope it is the only one she has! I didnt catch her mid-seizure so I am not sure if she did those things. By the time I got back to her she was on her back crying. She definitely had the scared yet unaware look in her eyes.
Also, my girl chihuahua's name is Chica. :)
Awww. I am glad to read to seems to be a bit better!
My little cat got very ill suddenly last year and we had to put him down. He had been with me for 13 years. It tough! My son still talks about him, but affectionately calls him "poor little Riley in heaven".

Seizures seem pretty common in older dogs.. at least in my house
They are scary to watch, but not so bad from the dog's perspective
My chocolate lab is 13. He has them every one in a while
We lost our 14 year old black lab in January from a seizure (started to seize and just stopped breathing). Honestly, its how i'd want to go.. tailing wagging one second, then gone the next. Seizures are not usually fatal. Wolfie was on borrowed time (bad heart)
I'm glad chica is ok!
I also have a Chihuahua, she is almost 9, I've had her since she was 8 weeks old.
