Each state will be a little different.
A name change can take 1-2 months and will cost a few hundred dollars. An online search for changing one's name in your state will turn up legal forms which will need to be submitted to the court (or you can obtain an attorney $$$). These documents will be submitted with certified copies of required documents (birth certificate, etc $$). Typically a classified ad in the local newspaper ($$) is required to ensure one is not changing name to escape culpability in regards to illegal actions or debt. After a specified time, a court date will be set and the person will appear before a judge ($$). If all is well, then the name is changed. Documents are filed with the court ($$). Many certified copies ($$) are needed to send to SSA, get a new drivers license, keep on hand to explain why school records, shot records, other medical records, etc are NOT the same as stated. Insurance, loans, banks, credit cards will need to be changed and likely require sending one of those certified copies.
I hope this helps.
