We are almost done with our homestudy and it is fully paid. We originally set aside 20k for this adoption. I'm concerned about medical expenses getting out of hand. Are most of your bmom's on medicaid? We could possibly come up with 5k more. What is a typical hospital bill for an adoption?
We requested situations that did not have medical expenses or emom expenses like clothing, rent, food & etc. We had a cap on what we wanted to spend and the agency only presented situations that met that. I think most emom's will have medicaid if they qualify.

I'll second 'sleep's' comment. Remember that you don't have to accept situations where there are additional fees. Most of the bmoms that we were involved with, had their expenses paid, and medicaid paid for the delivery.
I think your estimated amount is more than reasonable. In fact, I believe you'll find you have saved more than necessary.
Good luck, and I hope your baby finds you soon.
Sincerely,
Linny
We are planning to send profiles to an agency in UT that flys most of the expectant mothers there to live. It means that few of them are there long enough to qualify for medicaid. They get some situations were the mom has medicaid, but it would significatly lengthen our wait time. We can afford their fees, our travel, and a vaginal delivery fine. If the birth mom has an emergency c-section we might have to start making calls to family for money...something I would really like to avoid. We are in the exact same boat numbers wise...we have 20K in our home equity line account for this adoption. We might be able to get another 5-6K with help from family. Other than that, we would have to fly home without a baby. We just don't have it, so if medical was more than that, it wasn't the right baby for us!
We are opting for agencies with flat fees to reduces budgeting concerns. We also applied for an adoption credit card that has 0% interest for 6 months through the National Adoption Foundation, if we find ourselves in a crunch, and a few grants.
Here is a good list of resources:
