Now, Im stuck.. I dont know what to do next or how to do it... How can I request birth records? I dont even know her first name.. How can I get a copy of his original birth certificate- they want proof of who you are... I feel like I am at a standstill.. does anyone have any ideas... He was born and adopted in New York City. DOB 8/21/71
Thanks
You need a court order to get his OBC. Is his mother's maiden name common? I will pm you some ideas.

Hi. I'm also a NY adoptee.
You mentioned the birth index - that was the NYC birth index at the NY Public Library, I assume? How common is the last name you found there?
Have you tried the NY State adoption information registry? There's info here: https://www.health.ny.gov/vital_records/adoption.htm
Did you get the non-ID info direct from the agency? What sort of non-ID info did you get? Did they tell you the birth mother's age, perhaps?
NY, of course, remains a sealed state, so you can't get his original birth certificate as things stand now. Which sucks, I know. I'm sorry.
Hey Terrym, glad your helping find basic info.
There is an Adoption Decree in the court records where the final adoption was carried out. NY has recently opened it's records from what I understand.
Records of the final adoption hearing are kept in the court where the adoption was finalized, so it will depend on the county.
In that Adoption Decree are the names of the b-parents giving up the child to adoption. If you can get a copy of that document, it will tell you who the b-parents are.
I wish you the best.

Unfortunately, NY has not opened its records.
You can try to petition the court for your adoption records, but in NY, that's difficult bordering on impossible...

Thank you Emerald23- Yes, we joined the NY registry (how we got the adoption agency name) and we have all of the non ID info from the agency- physical descriptions, her age at the time of birth and her birth sign (so we can narrow it down to 2 months), # of her siblings, and her parents occupations. The last name from the index is pretty common, MacDonald. I just dont know what to do now :( It's some info, but not enough.. I dont even have a state she lived in... just a region which would consist of like 3-4 different states!
