I found my birth son through his adoption agency, Children's Home Society of New Jersey, but it took 10 years longer than it should have. Ten years ago I sent him a letter through the agency. They contacted him and asked for a $300 fee and possible submission to counseling to receive it. He was low income and uneasy with the request and declined. Staff members told me he didn't want connection. I believed them but thought he might change his mind in later years.
A couple of months ago I asked for a new search and paid their $300. They sent my birth son my second letter and he responded at once. When we met he said he's been wanting connection for years but was suspicious of the agency's requests. This weekend he flew out from Denver (I live in California) for our second meeting. We spent most two days together walking the trails and trying to make up for all the years of unnecessary separation.

I'm sorry that happened to you, but am happy for your reunion. I'm so glad that my adoption was private because I had the papers since I was 18. I didn't have to beg, pay be "counseled" or otherwise, I guess I'm lucky that I just had to be able to open the envelope. My reunion this summer turned out great, I'm going back this weekend for a nice long visit. Good luck to you. May you have many years of happiness with your son...:)
