Our little guy was born on Saturday and we brought him home Sunday night. We started w/the Lact-aid system and they make it look so simple. He latches on good, but the tube just never seems to be in the right place. I've tried taping it down in different ways, but if it the tape is too close to the nipple, then he cant get good suction. What's the trick?
I am sure you have solved the problem by now, but I thought I would make some suggestions in case anyone else reads this. Yes, the Lact-Aid does look easy, in the pictures and all, but it is only easy after you get the hang of it. I got where I could literally fill and position a Lact-Aid in the dark, all while holding the baby in one arm. (I usually had filled ones ready so I didn't have to do it in the dark, but got caught unprepared on occasion!) However, that was after I got through a learning period!
Tape can be helpful when you are first starting. It can help to tape the tube to your breast, 2-3 inches above your nipple, and then again about a half inch above, with the end of the tube hanging just about an eighth of an inch beyond the nipple.
A nursing bra that has a frame that goes all the way around the breast is helpful, too, both in keeping the tube under control and in supporting the breast while the flaps are down, especially in moms with larger breasts.
Another thing that helps is to swaddle the baby in a recieving blanket, so that you don't have little hands getting in the way. Also, have the baby supported on a pillow or something so that you don't have to hold him up. That way, you can focus just on getting the baby's mouth latched onto the nipple. I also found that it was sometimes easier to get a new baby latched holding him in the "football" hold.
One more thing is to be wearing a top that you can either take completely off, or unbutton far enough down to keep it out of your way, when the baby needs to be fed. Once you get the hang of it, wearing tops that can be lifted up just far enough for the baby to latch on will be practical but, when you are first learning, it is best to avoid anything that that can get in your way!
