I had a bit of a giggle moment this past weekend. I relocated about 6 months ago from what is probably considered the hair capital of the US - Atlanta, GA. So I was having a hard time finding a hair stylist that was comparable, IMO.
Out of sheer desperation one weekend, I entrusted my locks to a white woman (Stacy). She did a pretty good job (my hair is natural) and I go see her regularly now. I've talked to her about black hair and the trend towards avoiding chemical straightners. Yada, yada, yada... We've become fast friends.
This past weekend Stacy was blow drying my natural locks and sitting in the station across the room was another stylist (a black woman) applying a relaxer to her customer (a white woman). Huh? What the heck is going on over there?
I was completely fascinated watching her apply base around her edges, apply the white creamy relaxer, spray the oil sheen on the scalp to alleviate the burning, asking every few mins "how're you doing'? Totally brought back memories. It looked to me that the woman's hair was already super straight.
I dunno, maybe this is totally the norm. But it was just the oddest thing to see. I guess I was looking sort of perplexed because Stacy leaned down and whispered in my ear, "kind of ironic huh?"
So the irony of it wasn't lost on her either. I hope I bump into this customer again, I so want to see what her new growth looks like...
Isn't it funny? LOL My old hair stylist had CC women coming to her for relaxers. Go figure. I think it's a texture issue rather than releasing the curl. If hair is really coarse the relaxer will smooth it out. My DD was in a fashion show Saturday and I had to do a triple take at one of the other mom's because of her hair texture. Her hair looked like super kinky hair blow dried straight. She was a blue-eyed blonde with this very coarse hair.

That was ironic, lol Not so much where I now live, but in ny so many frizzy haired folks. lol Preaching to the choir, but with my kids I make sure to relay stuff like hair texture on a spectrum, as opposed to black hair and white hair. I saw too many ? hair texture, plus my grandmother hair was a 3 a/b, poor lady thought her hair was too frizzy. My sister and I loved to help her wash and comb her hair. Her siblings that I saw ranged from a 2 to a 3c.
Look at Chelsea Clinton and her now straight hair.
The hot comb, now flat irons, and relaxers were/are utilized a bit by frizzy/kinky haired women. :-) I recently found one box of a relaxer product forgot the name.. amongst the non Black hair items in Walmart. Vigorol is one old straightening product.
I also remember back when there was the utilized hair dress, one was Vitapointe, and the other was a hairdress in a black and gold tube.
Then there's good old Murrarys pomade. lol
Black and gold tube if VO5. My mother used to use it!

I would say it had more to do with texture. My CC hair is pretty fuzzy and I've thought about trying a relaxer to see what it would do, but ultimately I'm too chicken. On a humid day, not even the world's hottest flat iron can straighten my hair.
I have a friend whose origins are Mediterranean and her hair is ultra, ultra frizzy - she uses straighteners but with little success - I love her hair natural but she doesn't! I should suggest relaxing.

Relaxing is waaay cheaper than the japanese straightening system, brazilian straightening, Keratin treatments and the like. You can get a kit for around $6 and do it at home. Plus you only have to treat new growth when it comes in and not your entire head.
Here's a new treatment that's out... pretty pricey IMO but it doesn't have all the nasty stuff the other treatments have. I got the email yesterday...
Brocatos Smoothing Treatment NOW at ULTA!
ҕ A new formaldehyde-free smoothing treatment!
Keeps hair frizz-free for up to 12 weeks!
That's it V05! my mother used it too, she used the Vitapointe in my hair she was not one for heavier hair grease. She also used the Vigorol in my sister's hair.. it worked to relax the curl/kink. But full on straighter, I guess it depends on the diameter of the curls.
Any feedback on the Japanese/Brazilian treatments? I remember the was it Rio back when? it is scary how it takes a few bald women to protest.

The Japanese system does not work on Kinky hair so a rule of thumb is that it should not be used on most AA hair. The real brazilian system works on any type of hair but it is dangerous. If you need to wear a respirator to get it done it most be pretty bad. But... it does look gorgeous when it's done. I'm just not about to die to get rid of frizz.
My mom used Vitapointe on our hair. It was one of the products that was sold at the PX on the military base. I couldn't tolerate the smell of V05 so she used Vitapointe on us. One of my friends had suggested I use Vitapointe on DD. It's main ingredient is mineral oil and I've tried staying away from that for DD but the Miss Jessie's products are full of mineral oil. The mineral oil is why I only use Miss Jessies when in a pinch on her.

Speaking of cheap... I only pay $35 for Stacy to wash blow-dry and flat iron. In Atlanta, I paid $55. Coloring costs are also cheaper than what I was paying in Atlanta. I used to pay $105+ for color, now I pay between $60-$85.
You would think with all the stylists in Atlanta that the pricing would be more competitive, but I think what I paid there was really the going rate among good black hair stylists.
I hate paying hair care costs, but unless I miraculously develop some skills, I'm stuck.

Now that is cheap. They charge too much around here for haircare. I paid $50 for DD's at the Dominican salon so that will be saved for special occasions only. They start at $40 and go up based on the length of hair. DD has a lot of hair and it's thick. I see how folks fall into the texturizer trap for kids hair when they are dealing with this amount of hair. I spend so much time on DD's hair I have to figure out ways to cut down time on mine. DD asked me why I don't flat-iron my hair anymore. I don't have the patience to do hers and mine plus I'm just not feeling the straight hair thing anymore. If I want straight hair I'll wear a wig and I have a storage bin full of them. LOL
Somebody needs to with some simple system so we all can know what works for what hair textures not simply saying CC hair or black hair because the lines cross many times.
I started laser hair removal treatment. I had to go through all these changes to find out if the laser would work for me. Turns out the gentleYag is what works for darker skin... it actually works for all skin types. I got a serious deal on treatment... It's $350 for 8 treatments for my underarms. Treatments in the Atlanta area start at $900. I drive an hour up into the country and it's worth every single penny. Who would have thought a medspa was out in the sticks like that. They have an office closer to my house but they don't have the laser at that location that will work for dark skin.
That's an amazing deal for underarms. I had mine done for $650 a couple of years ago and THAT was a special. I went to Women's Institute for Health on Johnson Ferry Rd. WIFH.com I really loved that place... :(
I think ATL is a city where they know they can charge a premium and folks will pay it.
Permanent hair removal for underarms was money well spent. I started (then stopped) the bikini area... would like to do my legs eventually.

WIFH charges $900 for underarms. One of my co-workers found a place in Jasper, Georgia. $350 is the regular package price or you can pay $80 per session. Since I may need 6-8 sessions the package was the way to go. I'm not sure if I'll do the bikini area. I may rethink it if we go swimming a lot this summer.
You are right about ATL charging a premium. If people will pay it they will keep charging those prices.
Have you seen this?

I saw it on QVC and they made a point of saying it doesn't work for dark skin. I finally saw the 30 minute infomercial late one night and they didn't mention that at all. All the ethnic people they had on there were the same color as the CC's. The website says it will work on light brown skin but what light brown? Do they mean tan? I'm glad I saw the QVC presentation first.
