I received a call on Nov 17 from the adoption unit in Trenton. Seems that I was number one in line to adopt a safe haven infant girl. My adoption homestudy has been in the adoption unit since June 2006 so it took just over 5 years. I adopted an infant privately (he was born in Aug 2011) and thus was ineligible for the lil one (believe it or not I considered raising infants 3 months apart as a SINGLE mom). DYFS would like adoptions to be finalized and the family "stable" for a year before taking a new placement. Someone elses dream came true that day as they received the call after me. Was it anyone on these boards???

Hurray! Can you please tell us your story, Krob1982? Would love to hear it.I was up for a Safe Haven little girl last week. Didn't get her:( Went to another family. But considering that I got diagnosed with pneumonia a few days ago, this was a blessing. (I am on the mend)I had pretty much decided to close up shop as a foster mom, but when the Adoption Unit in Trenton calls - with a baby - well.....
I was lucky enough to get licensed for foster care on 26th of July and got a baby boy 27th of July I got him at 3 days old. I've had him for a month now.... We need to foster for 6 months before we can adopt but mom signed over her rights and there is no father named and the state isn't looking.... So he's ours just not legally yet.... We're extremely lucky!!!! We can't have kids of our own I had a hysterectomy 9 years ago when I was 21 :-(
We turned down a call for a Safe Haven baby (boy, born 8/20 in Hudson Co) a few weeks ago. Just didn't feel right for some reason, though we're eager to add another baby to our family. I'm not sure that I feel so comfortable with taking a baby who has truly no known family or medical history. I hope we made someone's day / life by saying no! THe one silverlining of having to make a heartbreaking choice like this was knowing someone else would be so incredibly thrilled to become this little boy's parent.
Thankful one- We would have loved that call! We are in the process of having our home study sent to adoption operations in hopes of getting a safe haven baby one day. We are currently fostering.
I was wondering...how long did you have to wait for the call? Was it years??
The call that is right for you will come...I believe in listening to those vibes...when its right...it's right.

Ugh, Irelady, I'm so sorry! Your RW is not doing their job - Approach their supervisor. Between Gayle and the RW supervisor they should be able to get your homestudy down there. Good luck. There's no list for safe haven babies - You just answer yes or no during your homestudy just like you answered yes or no to children who were conceived through rape or who have certain special needs.

Wow... Thanks thankfulone..2.5 years is a long time. I guess we will just see what's meant to be. We just want to open all doors. I will continue to check in to see if our homestudy was sent...as of now I know the request was sent to our resource worker. In the meantime we are enjoying the foster child we have!
Yea I wouldn't hold your breath for a safe haven baby this is the first in my city and I was licensed for one day nothing extra done. He has no health issues and mom has no health issues and dad has no health issues she's not naming dad and we know who mom is the state failed her in that department it wasn't anonymous like she wanted... I would take any baby though I am not picky if I was waiting for a perfect white blonde baby I'd be waiting YEARS!!!! Instead I got a healThy baby with questionable history in one day that I didn't even know I was licensed for..... He's 100% healthy black baby boy perfect for my family!!! Safe haven babies are soooooo completely rare I was sooooooo incrediabley lucky... I definitely wouldn't hold your breath for one though
I got a call also in August for a safe haven baby from Trenton too, probably the same call that a couple of you got. I was at work and they had called around 10AM, before I responsed at lunch time they had already dealt with it.
I'm not sure of all the particulars, but I do know that they call about 10 - 15 homestudy ready families, particuarly the ones that have been waiting longest. They see what call backs they get - sometimes people say it is often not the "right time" for them and it gets narrowed down.
So someone was very lucky. In my heart, I was saying "oh no as I had just started a full time corporate job in May - how the heck am I going to do this? So that is why I didn't call until lunch time and it was too late then.
Just goes to show you don't know what can happen around the corner as after that I was offered a part time position and more money per hour and now thinking I should have got on the fog horn right away!
Hello Vernell
I have been following this thread for a while and finally registered. Congrats on the adoptions:clap: I hope to be that adoptive parent one day. I currently have a FS in my care and it looks like he will be reunited with a family member. He's a little over two months now and I love him so much! I will surely miss him!
I read over the post and was wondering if you could send me the contact information for Safe Haven, would like to be considered for a possible match. I have done a search for the office and nothing is coming up. Please PM the contact information. Thanks!

It is the Adoption Operations Unit of DYFS in Trenton. They handle the so-called "Safe Haven" babies.1-609-888-7358 or 1-609-888-7492
