Hi folks,
Just beginning this adventure and would love any ideas / suggestions that folks have to offer. I lived in Poland for 3 years, speak the language, and have a family I have "adopted" over there after living with them.
I am a 38-year old single female interested in adopting a younger child (age 1-4), either gender. I would love any info on agencies and questions to ask. I am laughing at myself because I'm not much of a researcher, but I'm trying to do some research before embarking on this rather sizable decision.
Thanks so much in advance!
Peace
Debbie

I will add that you should most certainly check the state deaprtment site as an agency has been suspended from working in Poland as of March 6. Because you are early in this process I wanted to make sure you saw this before deciding on an agency. Be sure you are aware that two different agencies have been suspended. One was suspended for a number of months last year and there is one currently suspended for what is supposed to be 30 days. COA says that you should look for a pattern of suspensions, as they are not uncommon.
Can some please help me to understand the suspensions. Why would an agency be suspended? What do they need to do to be unsuspended? Is this common for Hague countries?
Also, if someone could PM me with which agency was suspended last year, or let me know how to find out.

For clarification, a suspended agency cannot work in a Hague country: "During this suspension, [the agency] must cease to provide all adoption services in connection with cases covered under the Hague Convention." In this case, that means Poland.
And the alert on the state department's site does not say 30 days. It may once haves stated that but as of tonight it states that the suspension lasts until "the accrediting entity has determined that the adoption service provider has completed the corrective action".

...which is standard language and exactly what they said when the other agency was suspended as well. That agency sued to regain their accreditation. Their suspension was from August-October of last year, it was just about 5 1/2 weeks. COA (the accrediting body) also states that a single suspension -- as is the case for either of the agencies that have been suspended temporarily for Poland -- does not a pattern make. And a pattern is what you should look for.
