They are quite the pair. Absolutely crazy about each other. She's gotten very good at sign language and spends a lot of time 'teaching' him.
She's now in her second year of teaching 4th graders. Her class is made up of 1/2 African American and a mix of Hispanic and Asian kids. Not a single Caucasian in her class.
During her first week this year they were starting a project about story telling. She told the story of her little brother. As she told it she could see the kids inching closer to her. At the end she showed them a picture of him.
The eyes went wide. She could hear them whispering, then one kid said. "He's black!"
