Hi everyone! I'm looking for a supportive, knowledgeable group to share our journey with. Tomorrow is our first night (of 12) of therapeutic foster classes. We're in NC and it's a 40-hour training program. We're not really sure what to expect.
I'm: 25, female, have a biological 1.5 year old little boy, own a business but am closing it to be merely self-employed, will be working 2 days/week while my boyfriend is not at work, volunteering for a few organizations including domestic violence shelter, attending doula and nutrition workshops in preparation for starting school (nursing program), and have always had a heart for adoption and hope to also start a maternity home/ministry (here or in another country) for disadvantaged, single expecting or new moms.
He's: 27, working full-time, has been co-parenting my son since he was 8 months old, will be adopting him, and is the best daddy I've ever met. :)
We haven't done any paperwork, interviews, or home studies yet. Is there anything pertinent we should know going into this?
One specific question we have is:
We are staying with family to save money and because we don't mind it. We would like to receive a long-term placement (and are open to 2-3 siblings) before we rent a place, so that we can rent in their school district/an appropriate size house for how many children we'll foster. How's that going to work with a home study?

That's true. Unless you have a separate apartment within the home, everyone over 14 (at least that is what it is here) will have to be fingerprinted and have a background check.
They need to see records of your finances.
Depending upon the size of the home you live in, this will help determine the number of children. Depending upon the area what that exact specification will be (i.e. In the bedrooms I have to have 40 square feet per child). If you are open to boys and girls you might need separate rooms for each gender - some areas allow siblings of opposite sexes to share a room until a certain age, usually to about 5.
Are you working with an agency? They should be able to tell you the specifics for the area in which you live. They should also cover some of this in training. I know for me, some of it was more general in training and the specifics came from the agency.
Good luck and welcome to the boards.
They said it's not a problem (it's their vacation house so they're hardly there) and that we would have one home study there, then they'd give us an idea on matches and we'd rent in their school district and then we'd do another home study. It's a private agency and they have several sibling sets whose goal is adoption. We decided to do regular vs. therapeutic.
