While his teacher does valiantly present a multicultural curriculum on different "holiday traditions", there is an overwhelming emphasis on Christmas in all forms. My son writes letters to Santa in class; makes ornaments; is asked to make a christmas wish list, etc. etc. Growing up in NYC and attending public school, I never had this experience. Christmas was not celebrated in the schools. How do you all cope with this? Thanks! And happy Hanukah to all. Nina

It's great to be exposed to all holiday celebrations. Just my opinion. Good luck.Bonnie

What I was addressing here are thorny issues in multiculturalism and separation of church and state, in which minorities are forced to participate in a hegemonic representation of culture - "Christmas=Americanism" It's not a matter of just being exposed (which is good), but of being subsumed in a white, Christian culture WITHOUT diversity. I personally don't think that December should be submerged in any (religious) celebrations in the public schools. Thanks for your considered reply, Bonnie!
