I have recently been reunited with a childhood friend who has Huntingtons disease. She is eight months pregnant and will be unable to take care of the baby. The baby is up for adoption, but no one has come forward yet (due to the Huntingtons). I would be honoured to raise the child, and the birth-mom has given her consent. How do we proceed with an open, independant adoption? Also, I would have to move into a house that's more sutable for a baby then my current living conditions. How will this affect my homestudy?
The birth mom lives in Montana, I live in Northern California.
I am 29 years old (female), single, college educated, business owner (but by no means rich!)
Thanks for any help, advice, or direction you can give.

Since the birthmother lives out of state, you need a pre-placement home study (for interstate purposes, involving the child crossing state lines). This can either be done by your county social service dept. or a licensed private agency (usually this is much quicker). You may want to get your attorneyҒs advice on which direction to go with this, but our agency (Independent Adoption Center, located in Pleasant Hill) does these types of home studies for independent adoption), as well as other private agencies. Your home study would be done based on your current residence. If you move before the child is placed with you, the agency that did your home study would need to make a home visit to your new home and complete a home study update based on your new residence. This is routinely done and is not a problem, except that you need to pay an additional fee for the update.
Best of luck!
