From Mexico to the USA

Feature Image

My adoption story starts in Mexicali, Baja California. I was 1 year old and my parents had been killed in a robbery at a local convenience store. I had no relatives so a monestary took me in. I stayed there for about a year and later was put up for adoption. A couple from Oakland, California decides to adopt a kid from Mexico. To my luck, this wonderful family chooses to adopt from Baja California, Mexico. The process took about 7 months but after those months, which seemed to be long, I was welcomed to a family of 4. My adoptive mother and father kept my first name and I adjusted well with my new siblings. Time passes and at this time I have just turned 12 years of age. My parents decide that I should know about my origin and tell me the whole deal.

I felt confused and made many mistakes but throughout that time I realized that i was very fortunate to be adopted by such a wonderful family. I am 17 now and I have been in denial about my ethnicity. My adoptive parents have Brazilian, Spanish, and Italian blood in them. I always identified myself as what they where. And i was very proud of the heritage that i grew up in. I found it hard to give up such a rich heritage that I liked and ended up lying to people about who I truly was. Now I realize that being Mexican isn’t something I should hide but something I should be proud of. I am learning to become true to myself and let people now of my story. I wish that comprehension is given to me from all the lies that I’ve implemented in my life and hope for understanding.
