Pacific Lutheran University, in the state of Washington, reached out recently to older foster youth. Providing guided tours to groups of all sorts, this university spends three days annually welcoming foster youth who are aging out of the system. Included in those three days are scholarship awards, education about filling out forms and writing essays, touring the facility, and even how to deal with stress. With daunting statistics regarding youth who age out of the system (only about 2% graduate from college) the Pacific Lutheran University is moving boldly toward changing what “could have been” for foster youth in the area.
