Hi everyone. My husband and I are just starting the adoption process. We meet with the agency this Saturday! We are nervous and excited. I wonder how the adoption experience is for other AA couples adopting an AA infant. Was the process smooth, did it move quickly compared to other stories you've heard about?

Welcome, and best wishes. We started the adoption process hmm, 5 years ago. I networked a bit, (not too much due to wanting to be as ethical as possible) but had our home study and follow-up with a local agency. We were gender specific, so it could have been a long stretch. We were domestic (private) our age requirement was newborn to 2. Our newborn ended up as a toddler placement, straight adopt from foster care. It's my understanding that the wait in general is longer, even for AA children. However each situation is unique.

Sorry should have elaborated more, should say the wait slowed down even with AA babies. We were private agency domestic. Not sure, I thought girls are the more desired. Right before we got the call about DD the situations slowed down, (now 3 years ago) and I mean low or no drugs taken by expectant mom. This bad economy may change that. The stats are old, but in general (private voluntary relinquishment) AA moms place less, or change their minds more so. The foster stats may be different. Overall the road to adopting ones child can change, as it did with us. But the right placement is out there. DD fits in with us just right.

It was really fast when we adopted 5 years ago. Most AA couples had a baby waiting by the time the paperwork was finished. The agency that we used for my DD's adoption is quoting 6-9 months now for a newborn if you don't specify gender. If you specify gender it appears to take up to 12 months. For some reason placements have slowed down in this bad economy.
Sleeplvr, thanks for this! I had plans to call LW to get this exact info. ETA: I guess I could still call just to say "hello" :)
