Some of you know he story of B, my youngest. He came home at 5, after 5 placement. He was dx'd ADHD, ODD and mood disorder and put on stimulants. He's had a rough time of it this year in school, so bad that he's off the bus and is going to a structured school next year. I've noticed that there's some anxiety when he talks. So at psych visit, I ask for an anti-anxiety medicine. She prescribes a small dosage. It seems to work!! The opposition decreases!! At the last visit, she increased the dosage the opposition disappears. That along with EMDR therapy seem to do the trick. Of course, when I mentioned EMDR to the psychiatrist, she didn't think it was working (he just started) and didn't think he was traumatized as he never talked about it. He's ten!! What would he say?? :D
That's great news! My 8-yr old JJ was put on a stimulant and an anti-psychotic about three years ago. When he started on the meds, I couldn't believe it! He sat and colored for several hours! THis was a boy who raged and knocked over shelves and spit and scratched daily, but suddenly there he was, calm and focused and ENJOYING himself! A few months later he said to me, "I didn't like being four because I didn't like being naughty." He could actually see the difference in himself!
At the beginning of this last school year, I decided to decrease his anti-psych meds to see how he did. I was eventually able to ween him off of it totally. I didn't tell his teacher but after a couple of weeks she called me to tell me that for some reason, while he was a little more hesitant to participate in things (nothing that interfered with the classroom to any extent) he suddenly seemed to "get" reading and math. She said, he's figuring problems out before we even read them to him!
I think he just needed the time on the meds to see and feel what it was like to be in control of himself, and eventually was able to take over that himself. He is still on the ADHD meds, though, and forgetting to give it to him every now and again demonstrates that YES, he DOES still need to be on those! :P

Nice!! Great that he's off one med. B is also getting EMDR therapy so at some point, he'll be able to come off the meds. Isn't a great feeling??
